From Metro's website, 6/18/10:

Is there another way to tunnel?

There was an intriguing discussion on Thursday in the Construction Committee of the Metro Board of Directors involving different tunneling methods that could be used on the Westside Subway Extension and other Metro projects that may require tunneling such as the Downtown Regional Connector, the Crenshaw Line and a 710 tunnel (if that project comes to pass).

Curbed L.A., 9/3/10:

Metro kept to their deadlines and released both environmental impact reports for the Regional Connector project and the Westside subway extension by putting them out before the end of summer (just under the wire).

From The Source, 9/2/10:

Draft Study for Regional Connector Released
Connecting the spokes of county's transit system

The Regional Connector Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Report officially goes public Friday. While it may not be quite as sexy a project as the Westside Subway Extension that follows a similar Measure R project timeline, it does something the subway project does not: it connects four light rail corridors covering over 80 miles across Los Angeles County through the center of downtown Los Angeles. As a result, light rail commuters should save 10 to 20 minutes per trip.

More here, including a map of what the connected system will look like.

Note the worry about what to call the Expo Line is only temporary, as it would be paired with the existing East L.A. segment of the Gold Line. The Pasadena Gold Line (and eventual extension to Azusa) would revert to its original name, Blue Line, and be paired with the existing Long Beach Blue Line.

From LA Downtown News, 11/12/10:

The Downtown Regional Connector, a two-mile underground track that transit experts say is the lynchpin to a better-performing regional light-rail system, took a big step forward last month.

Metro’s board of directors on Oct. 28 approved one of four potential routes for final study, initiating the last major planning phase needed before the $1.36 billion project can be built.

Los Angeles Downtown News, 1/14/11:

In response to concerns from Little Tokyo civic and business leaders, officials planning the Regional Connector have altered the rail link’s route. The new path aims to minimize the impact on area shops and parking.

There is the story.

The action is an important prerequisite for Metro to begin final design of the nearly two-mile underground light rail line in Downtown L.A. and for the agency to seek federal funding to help build it. View the full article
