From Amtrak, 10/21/05:

Amtrak Service To Resume November 4 Between New Orleans And San Antonio

Sunset Limited will also serve Houston, Beaumont, Lafayette and other destinations

WASHINGTON – Amtrak service by the Sunset Limited between New Orleans and San Antonio will resume November 4. The three-day-a-week train had been suspended since August 27 because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the resulting damage to the railroad line, signals, bridges and other infrastructure.

Passengers can now make reservations at Amtrak.com, by calling 800-USA-RAIL or at staffed Amtrak stations, including New Orleans, Houston and San Antonio.

The Sunset Limited (trains 1 & 2) normally operates three-days weekly between Los Angeles and Orlando, via San Antonio, Houston and New Orleans. Service east of New Orleans, via Biloxi and Mobile, will not be possible until next year because of storm damage done to tracks, bridges and other infrastructure owned by CSX Transportation.

However, repairs made since Hurricane Katrina (and the subsequent damage by Hurricane Rita in September) will be completed in time to permit Amtrak, the Union Pacific Railroad and the BNSF Railway to restore Sunset Limited service west of New Orleans.

The first eastbound train to arrive in New Orleans from Los Angeles will be Train 2 that leaves Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 2, at 2:30 p.m., departs San Antonio on Friday, November 4 at 1 a.m. and arrives in New Orleans at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4. The first westbound train to depart New Orleans for Los Angeles will be Train 1 that leaves New Orleans on Friday, November 4, at 11:55 a.m., arrives in San Antonio on Saturday, November 5 at 5:40 a.m., and arrives in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 6, at 10:10 a.m.

Other Amtrak services at New Orleans include the daily Crescent to and from Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington and New York City and the daily City of New Orleans to and from Jackson, Memphis, Carbondale and Chicago.
