MTA will get larger ferry boats for L train shutdown route

With just seven months to go before the start of the 15-month L train shutdown, the MTA and city officials are still working out the kinks in their mitigation plan. One of the transit alternatives during the shutdown include a new ferry route that would run between Williamsburg and Manhattan’s Stuyvesant Cove.

Vice New York, Brooklyn, NY 9/20/18:

A First Look at 'the New L,' the Startup Community’s Solution to the L Train Shutdown

For $155 a month, L train passengers can take an ultra-lux alternative that offers free WiFi and a breakfast bar.

When the L train goes offline in April, the respective transit agencies have put forth an expected breakdown of just where those 275,000 daily commuters will end up. Up to 80 percent (220,000 riders) will take alternate subway routes. Fifteen percent (41,250) will hop onto the cavalcade of new shuttle bus routes; five percent (13,750) will use temporary ferries; and one to two percent (2,750) will ride bikes. There is also an X factor: the number of passengers who can afford to hail Ubers every day.

SNIP

As VICE reported, The New L was met with instant criticism when it was first announced in late July. Transit reporters argued that the shuttles, like Ubers, would only add to traffic on streets and on the Williamsburg Bridge. Costing $155 a month for a one-way ticket, they added, it served as an apt symbol of the shutdown’s socioeconomic undertones. In response, Jaime Getto, its founder, said that the shuttle would take private cars off the road by compressing the single rides that would otherwise be taken in an Uber into a large Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that fits up to 15 people.

East Village already a ‘war zone’ ahead of L train shutdown

Residents and business are fed up from the noise and traffic due to construction on East 14th Street. Helayne Seidman

The L train shutdown is still seven months away, but East Villagers say they’re already going through hell.

Non-stop construction spanning two blocks on East 14th Street near the First Avenue station is costing residents their sleep and sanity, while businesses are losing customers and cash.

SNIP

The massive operation between First Avenue and Avenue B is all in preparation for the stop to serve as a “staging zone” for workers to take old materials out from the East River tunnel and put new components in. The large shafts will then be converted into elevators and stairway openings to the subway once the project is complete in 2020.

Before every public hearing they’ve held on the subject, New York City Transit president Andy Byford and Department of Transportation commissioner Polly Trottenberg have said that the L train shutdown will be the biggest challenge of both of their careers.

MTA will boost service on 7 subway lines during L train shutdown

The agency is planning for an additional 1,000 roundtrips every week during the shutdown

In efforts to mitigate the impact of the forthcoming L train shutdown, the MTA has announcement plans to boost subway service by more than 1,000 additional roundtrips every week, across seven subway lines, during the 15-month period.

The agency will roll out an extra 198 roundtrips each weekday and an additional 94 weekend roundtrips, “pushing fleet, signal and track capacity to existing limits where feasible,” says New York City Transit. The G line will bear much of the brunt of those additional trips and is expected to pump out an additional 66 roundtrips during the week and an extra 24 on weekends. The M train will also be carrying a heavy load, with an additional 62 roundtrips on weekdays and extended overnight service. Other lines that will run additional trips include the A, E, F, J, R, and the Z. The R line will see a decrease in its number of weekday roundtrips to make way for an increase in M train service.
