Cincinnati, OH Enquirer, 1/18/18:

Cincinnati streetcar down at least until Monday for repairs

The Cincinnati streetcar got off to a roaring start in September 2016, on a blue-skied sunny day.

But now, 16 months into its run, city leaders and streetcar operators say the city's five streetcars, manufactured in Spain by CAF USA, often don't work in extremely cold temperatures.

Streetcar update: Back on track Monday, then suspended

Just when things seemed to finally smooth out for the Cincinnati Bell Connector, service was suspended again on Monday.

According to Twitter, streetcar service was suspended around 9 a.m. due to a power failure at Walnut and 9th Street. Service resumed at 9:30 a.m.

No easy fix for Cincinnati streetcars that don't run in the cold; rebuild only option

Rebuild the streetcar. That's the message in a letter from the agency that oversees its operations, sent to city officials after the Cincinnati streetcar was shut down last month for four days because it couldn't run in the extreme cold.

City replacing streetcar hardware in preparation for winter weather

CINCINNATI -- The city is in the process of replacing streetcar vehicle hardware that malfunctioned during prolonged subfreezing temperatures last winter, the city manager said in a memo Tuesday.

Acting City Manager Patrick Duhaney said the firm that manufactured Cincinnati's five streetcar vehicles -- Elmira, New York-based CAF USA -- replaced air compressors on two of the vehicles this fall, after testing the new design earlier this year at their New York facility.

CAF is in the process of testing the new compressors during passenger service and will install the new compressors on the remaining three vehicles this month, Duhaney said.
