Representatives from Valley Metro appeared before city council Aug. 15 to discuss the future of the light rail in Glendale. While the chief issue discussed was where the last stop of the line would be, if and how the line would cross Grand Avenue and where the for the project would come from were also factors.

Downtown Glendale Will Not Get Light Rail

Downtown Glendale will not be getting light rail. At the Glendale City Council’s meeting this week, four members voted to end the council’s study of light rail, while three others wanted to move forward with it or put off the decision for a few weeks

Majority of council halts city’s light rail

During its Oct. 17 workshop, council could not come to consensus to authorize staff to continue its research on bringing light rail to downtown Glendale. The lack of consensus effectively ended the prospect of light rail coming to town.

Top 10 reasons to proceed with light rail

At our Oct. 17 workshop session, Glendale City Council once again considered our long-planned connection to the Valley Metro light rail system. At the end of our discussion, four of the seven councilmembers (Weiers, Hugh, Malnar, and Clark) did not feel Glendale should continue moving forward with our light rail plans.

Light rail does not make sense

Rather than list “Top 10 reasons not to proceed with light rail,” I will simply say this and ask you read the Wall Street Journal column from their weekend edition of Nov. 10 and 11, 2017.      “It’s the Last Stop on the Light Rail Gravy Train” Link is provided at the close of this letter.

Glendale council snuffs plan for downtown light rail

The Glendale City Council withdrew from plans for a light-rail route to downtown Glendale in a 5-2 vote Tuesday night.

The decision comes nearly two months after the council directed city staff against moving forward on the 7-mile route, which had been projected to open in 2026.

Arizona Republic column, Phoenix, AZ, 1/19/18:

How will Glendale spend $162 million after killing light rail?

Glendale estimates it has $162.4 million to spend over the next 25 years after the City Council voted in late 2017 to kill plans for light rail.

But how the city should spend the money earmarked for transportation is up for debate. Suggestions range from more bus routes to better roads.
