One of Metro’s newest trains derails near Farragut North
January 15, 2018 10:02 am

Multiple rail cars derailed on a Metro train bound for Glenmont Monday morning. Nobody was injured as the cars went off the tracks in a tunnel near D.C.'s Farragut North station. It was the first time one of the 7000 series trains derailed. Red Line service is operating in two sections from Shady Grove to Dupont and from Glenmont to Judiciary Square.

WASHINGTON — Sixty three people have been safely evacuated from a Metro Red Line train that derailed Monday morning between the Metro Center and Farragut North stations, Metro said. No injuries have been reported.

The front end of the new 7000 series Metro train derailed about 500 feet from Metro Center platform, Metro said.

It was the first derailment on the main line for any of the new rail cars, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said during a morning news conference.

SNIP

Stessel said the derailment did not occur at a switch point and did not occur in an area subject to weekend track work.

Derailment called a ‘red flag’ as Md. lawmakers debate funding for Metro
January 15, 2018 5:38 pm

WASHINGTON — Monday morning’s derailment along Metro’s Red Line comes as regional lawmakers are discussing ways to pay for capital improvements for Metro, including the possibility of dedicated funding.

SNIP

Maryland state Sen. Brian Feldman doesn’t think the Red Line derailment compromises those legislative efforts.

He calls the incident another “red flag” that underscores just why dedicated funding is needed from D.C., Virginia and Maryland.

Red Line train derails near Metro Center
January 15, 2018 10:45 pm

WASHINGTON — Red Line riders should plan for delays during their Tuesday morning commute as trains are expected to continue sharing a single track after a train derailed outside the Metro Center station.

Repairs were expected to continue overnight and into the morning to fix a 10-foot stretch of rail that shattered.

SNIP

The train continued to slide another 1,200 feet, scraping the sides of the train along the concrete walkways and kicking up dust that passengers mistook for smoke. The cars remained upright, Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said during an afternoon briefing.

What Metro did to reopen the Red Line after Monday’s derailment

January 16, 2018 1:04 pm

WASHINGTON — The Red Line track where a train derailed Monday morning reopened Tuesday, about 28 hours after firefighters helped some 60 riders walk through the tunnel to safety.

In that time, investigators documented the scene and tracks were repaired.

SNIP

Workers completed enough rail repairs by 3:45 a.m. Tuesday to move the three cars that had derailed along with the final car of the train coupled to them to a rail yard.

Once the cars were moved, crews worked from about 4 a.m. to just after 10 a.m. to pour concrete that then had to cure, install new rail and fasteners, then reinstall and test track circuits used to monitor train movement, among other things.
