Future Metro SmarTrip options may include key fobs, stickers

WASHINGTON — SmarTrip cards are here to stay for a while.

Metro is in the process of replacing all fare gates in the rail system and lining up a new contractor to provide SmarTrip cards or other payment technologies in the future, and each proposal requires the current fare payment system to remain in place for now.

Metro has continued to consider a more significant fare system overhaul since canceling previous efforts in 2016; those changes are not included in the SmarTrip or fare gate contracts.

The SmarTrip card proposals do ask for potential options, such as key fobs, stickers or rings that could have Metro’s payment system embedded inside, although similar requests were considered during the previous search for new fare payment technology. Other possibilities under consideration now include incorporating Metro payment methods into work or college identification cards and cellphone or app-based ticketing.

WMATA news release 4/10/18:

Metro moves to become mobile ready, announces plans to offer new app, mobile fare payment options beginning next year

Metro today announced that it is working with its fare payment vendor to become “mobile ready” by next year, enabling customers to pay for their Metro trip using a mobile device rather than a SmarTrip card.

As part Metro’s initiative to upgrade its fare collection system, Metro is also developing a new fare payment app that will allow customers a quick and easy way to pay and manage their SmarTrip account from anywhere.

The new mobile fare payment platform will work with Metro’s existing infrastructure, eventually allowing customers to tap their mobile device to the white target at the faregate. The payment process is designed to be seamless and will have a similar experience to tapping a SmarTrip card today. Using the app, customers will be able to check fares, get real-time service information, and add money to their SmarTrip account instantly through Auto-Reload when the value is low.

Metro expects to complete the mobile fare payment upgrades in 2019, creating a platform that supports multiple mobile payment providers. Because payment in the transit environment must meet certain technical requirements to ensure quick transaction speeds, each mobile provider will announce the ability for customers to pay for Metro trips using their service on their own timetable.

“Mobile fare payment is the future of transit, giving customers the ability simply to tap their phone and go, all without stopping at a fare vending machine or using a separate card,” said Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld. “Not only will this be a better, easier experience, but will cost less to operate.”

Mobile payments will be supported on Metrorail, Metrobus, and regional bus services that accept SmarTrip today.

The modernization project will be done in three phases. During the first phase, which is already underway, Metro will upgrade existing fareboxes, faregates and fare vending machines to support mobile payments and extend their useful life until they can be replaced.

During the second phase of the project to be completed by 2020, Metro will install new faregates at more than 900 entry/exit lanes at all 91 stations. The current faregates are more than 25 years old, using original power and communications systems. The new faregate design will be selected based on a number of factors, including customer input, speed, reliability, and ability to prevent fare evasion. In addition, new fareboxes will be installed on buses to replace the existing 15-year old equipment.

The final phase of the fare modernization will include new fare vending machines that will be more user friendly with large touchscreens, better accessibility for customers with disabilities, multi-language support, and a smaller physical footprint.

Once complete, the investment in new infrastructure and mobile fare payment will create a self-service model that reduces the reliance on fare equipment, operations and maintenance costs while expanding payment options for customers.

Using smartphone as SmarTrip is still in the cards for Metro, but other transit agencies are getting antsy

Some speed bumps for efforts toward making it easier to pay to get around using only a smartphone are driving potential division across the D.C. region.

Metro has yet to release even a preliminary version of an app — promised last year — that would allow riders to turn their phones into virtual SmarTrip cards starting this year. The agency is still working on user interface issues, according to Northern Virginia Transportation Commission staff.

“Their phase zero was scheduled for December 2018, and they’re not yet at that point yet,” said Patricia Happ, Northern Virginia Transportation Commission regional fare program manager.

Metro is still working to theoretically allow some type of mobile payment by at least the end of the year, Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said in an email.

Metro’s mobile fare payment system coming in 2020

Metro’s long awaited and eagerly anticipated mobile payment system is coming online in 2020, the transit agency said Thursday.

Sometime next year, riders will be able to use a virtual SmarTrip card stored in their Apple Wallet to tap in at fare gates. Riders also will be able to load value through their phones.

The feature will initially only be available for iPhones, but an Android version is being developed, officials said.

“It’s going to be a game changer for us,” Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said.

Apple Pay With Express Transit Mode Coming to D.C. Metro and More Chinese Cities in 2020

Apple Pay with Express Transit mode is coming to the Washington Metro in 2020, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced today. No specific timeline has been provided yet.

Starting next year, riders in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area will be able to add their reloadable SmarTrip fare card to the Wallet app and simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless payment reader at Metrorail stations or on Metrobus buses to pay their fare.

Express Transit mode allows for tap-and-go payment, eliminating the need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The device does not need to be waked or unlocked, either.
