Coronavirus in NYC: Subway service cutbacks lead to packed commute

There was no social distancing for these early-morning straphangers.

Startling video shows subway riders packed like sardines Tuesday morning because of reduced service — which the MTA pinned on coronavirus-related sick calls.

“This is our reality, we’re hopeless,” said restaurant manager Damaris Sierra, who filmed her packed 4 train headed into Manhattan from the Bronx at around 5:35 a.m.

Coronavirus Updates: What to Know About MTA Service

Updated March 24, 2020

Taking precautions against COVID-19 means we have fewer train crews available while our employees follow steps that health officials recommend for everyone. As a result, we are making some changes to service.

Our frontline employees—train crews, dispatchers, track workers, and everyone else who’s keeping New York moving—are heroes, and we continue to salute their service.

Subway service

Duplicative subway service: We will not run B, W, or Z service on Tuesday, March 24. Alternatives:

  • B: Use C, D, and Q service instead.
  • W: Use N and R service instead.
  • Z: Use J service instead.

L service: Read more about service alternatives during the L Project, included extended M service.

Staten Island Railway: Staten Island Railway will run every 20 minutes during peak hours, making all local stops, and will run hourly during overnight hours, in order to match the scaled back ferry service.

Branch service that’s not operating
  • 5 service between Nereid Av and E 180 St in the Bronx. Use 2 service instead.
  • 5 service between Bowling Green and Brooklyn College-Flatbush Av. Use 4 and 2 service instead.
  • A service between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park. Use the S shuttle to connect with Far Rockaway A service.
  • E service between Jamaica-179 St and Union Turnpike. Use F service instead.
Suspended express service
  • There will be no express service on the 4, 5, and 6 lines in the Bronx.
  • D trains will make local stops in the Bronx and will run express in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
  • There is no 7 express service.
  • F trains will make all local stops in Manhattan and Brooklyn and will continue to run express in Queens.
  • N Express in Manhattan – N trains will make all local stops in Manhattan and will continue to run express in Brooklyn.
  • J trains will make all local stops.
  • Staten Island Railway will make all local stops.

New York MTA Providing Masks to Frontline Workforce

Following the deaths, on the same day, from coronavirus of a subway conductor and a bus driver, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has secured 75,000 protective masks for its frontline employees.

The masks, the MTA said, have been secured through New York State health authorities for distribution to New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, Staten Island Railway and MTA Bus workers. The supply “is expected to increase allowing weekly replenishment,” MTA said on March 27.  .  .  .

New York MTA to distribute 75K masks to frontline workers

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has secured 75,000 masks to be distributed to its workforce. The supply, which will be distributed to New York City Transit, MTA Bus Co., Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and MTA Bridges and Tunnels, is expected to increase allowing weekly replenishment. The plan for distribution of masks is being finalized in coming days. Medical guidance continues to be that masks are not recommended as protection against COVID-19, however, masks will be made available to employees who choose to wear them.

Personal protective equipment, including masks, continues to be mandatory for certain positions and duties across the agency and will continue to be provided in these instances. For other employees, this equipment will be distributed to employees as it is made available at this time and in accordance with the plans to be developed by the agencies, as there is a nationwide shortage of masks.

Coronavirus News: Social distancing is not happening on the NYC subway

MTA has reduced service because of the enormous drop in ridership, but at least during rush hour riders seem to be placed in unsafe, overcrowded environments on subway trains and buses.
