The disposable masks will be available from dispensers placed at the front of the bus, near where customers board.

CTA

As part of its continuing efforts to promote a healthy travel environment, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) began a pilot program to provide free, disposable face masks on CTA buses.

The pilot will allow CTA to assess a variety of factors, including demand for masks and logistics for replenishing stock on buses that are out in service all day. If successful, the program will later expand to the remainder of CTA’s buses serving all 129 routes, as well as rail stations.

CTA Launches COVID Vaccination Plan for Employees

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), working with the City of Chicago, Chicago Department of Public Health, and Capsule, recently launched a phased program to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to all agency employees.

Public transit workers are included in Phase 1b of the city’s vaccination plan, which began in February. In accordance with public health guidance, the vaccination plan prioritizes frontline employees like bus and rail operators, followed by the CTA's maintenance, infrastructure, and other operations support staff.  . . .

Welcome Back! CTA Transit Ambassadors to Greet Returning Riders

June 11, 2021

Welcoming customers and providing helpful tips, CTA Transit Ambassadors ensure riders feel at home as they head back on board; Capacity restrictions lifted on all CTA vehicles

With the City’s entry into the final phase of Mayor Lightfoot’s “Open Chicago” initiative, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) today launched a new Transit Ambassador program – the latest component in the agency’s efforts to help welcome back transit riders as they resume their previous day-to-day activities. Complementing these efforts, the CTA is also lifting all capacity limits on its buses and trains.

Wearing specially-designed T-shirts, CTA’s Transit Ambassadors will be deployed to various rail stations across the system beginning today through the remainder of the month. The Ambassadors, who are CTA employee volunteers, will greet riders, answer questions and hand out information on the various measures the agency is taking to provide a safe, clean comfortable transit experience.

“We’ve made a number of improvements over the last year-and-a-half, and deploying friendly, knowledgeable Transit Ambassadors throughout the system, is just one of the many ways we are working to help riders feel at home as they resume traveling our buses and trains,” said Dorval R. Carter, Jr., CTA President. “The pandemic required many of our customers to work remotely, socially distance and stay at home for more than a year. Now that the city is opening up, we want to warmly welcome customers back and remind them that CTA is the convenient, affordable and safe choice to get around the city.”

Additionally, with the City of Chicago and State of Illinois transitioning to Phase 5 of the reopening efforts and removing capacity restrictions, the CTA is eliminating passenger capacity limits on buses and trains. Now, all vehicles will be able to run at full capacity. The CTA had enacted limited capacity and social distancing policies during the pandemic. However, it also was the only major transit agency in the country to run at full service, in order to provide safe travel for essential workers and other riders making essential trips.

CTA’s Transit Ambassador Program and the elimination of capacity limits are just two measures the agency has implemented under its multi-faceted “When You’re Ready, We’re Ready!” campaign. Launched in May, the campaign aims to welcome riders back to public transit by promoting the affordability and convenience of the CTA, while also highlighting the multiple ways the agency is providing the safest, cleanest travel experience possible. Other initiatives launched as part of the campaign include the Refresh & Renew station improvement program, which will bring improvements to nearly 90% of CTA’s rail stations; as well as the “More Fun, Less Fare” summer fare promotion, which offers reduced prices on three of the agency’s most popular, unlimited-ride pass products.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the CTA has further enhanced an already robust cleaning regimen of its stations and vehicles, with new technologies and procedures. Each vehicle is cleaned before going into service and throughout the day, in addition to routine deep cleanings.

In an effort to help re-enforce the federal mask mandate for public transportation, the CTA has free masks available on every bus and at every rail station. The CTA has also distributed nearly 30,000 Travel Healthy Kits – each containing a reusable cloth mask, a 2 oz. bottle of hand sanitizer and a healthy travel tips guide – at various stations throughout the system.

CTA Ridership Jumps More Than 55%

Bus and rail ridership for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has more than doubled since the start of the year and continues to grow, according to officials, as public transit continues to play a vital role in the city and region’s reopening.

Since January, overall ridership has jumped 56%, to four million rides a week. Rail ridership — which saw a sharper drop during the pandemic than bus ridership — was up 9% in mid-June compared to January, with more than 1.6 million weekly trips.

CTA news release

CTA Ridership Jumps More Than 55 percent Since Start of Year

July 8, 2021

Ridership sees 20 percent uptick since May; Customers returning to buses and trains for work, recreation, summer activities—as transit remains an essential part of the City’s reopening

Ridership across the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) rail and bus system has more than doubled since the start of the year and continues to grow, officials said today, as public transit continues to play a vital role in the city and region’s reopening.

Since January, overall ridership has jumped 56 percent, to 4 million rides a week. Rail ridership—which saw a sharper drop during the pandemic than bus ridership—was up 94 percent in mid-June compared to January, with more than 1.6 million weekly trips.

“There is no question that the CTA service needs to support the return to all the things we used to do,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. “Whether you’re getting back to the office or enjoying one of Chicago’s many summertime events, the CTA is ready when you’re ready.”

In recent months, with the City’s gradual re-opening, the CTA has seen some of its biggest gains in ridership. Since May 1, CTA ridership has jumped more than 20 percent, and in the month of June, weekday average ridership was over 600,000, more than double the ridership at the height of the pandemic.

Ridership to and from the Loop has seen the biggest gains of any area of the city, as workers return to the office and downtown events and activities. Since May 1, rail ridership is up 53 percent, while ridership on bus routes primarily serving the Loop was up 41 percent.

As it did throughout the pandemic, the CTA continues provide the highest levels of service, and is committed to continuing its extensive cleaning and disinfecting program, which is among the strongest of any U.S. transit agency. By operating on a full-service schedule, the CTA has the capacity to accommodate additional riders as Chicagoans slowly resume their previous day-to-day activities, including their daily commutes to and from work. And soon students will be returning to in-person classes this fall, which is when the agency expects to see yet another uptick in weekday ridership.

“Although the City has fully reopened, we remain committed to continuing to provide a clean, healthy and comfortable travel environment,” Carter said. “We’re doing everything we can to roll out the welcome mat for our customers, and reminding them that public transit is the most affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly way to get around,” Carter added.

While ridership is up, it is still well below pre-pandemic levels. Like transit agencies across the country, the CTA is strongly focused on encouraging riders to return to transit.

Over the last several weeks, the CTA launched “When you’re ready, we’re ready!” a comprehensive, multi-faceted campaign to promote ridership and tout the importance of public transit. Among many elements, the campaign includes “Refresh & Renew,” an expanded and accelerated program to improve more than 125 rail stations across the system by the end of the year.

The CTA also introduced a summertime fare promotion, “More Fun, Less Fare,” which offers significant discounts on the most popular multi-ride passes. The already affordable passes dropped even further: $5 for a 1-day, $15 for a 3-day; $20 for a 7-day.

CTA press release

CTA’s Promotional Fares Help Drive Ridership Increase and Support Return to Transit

September 15, 2021
Agency sees a nearly 70 percent increase in average ridership among those who use the promotional pass

The Chicago Transit Authority’s ‘More Fun, Less Fare’ promotional pass discount proves to be hugely popular among new and returning riders, while also helping shape new travel trends supporting the agency’s ongoing efforts to steadily increase system-wide ridership.  Last month, CTA extended the fare promotion to November 25, 2021.

Since introducing the promotional discounts Memorial Day weekend, more than 10 million rides have been taken using the three types of unlimited-ride passes. The 1-Day Promotional Pass experienced the highest-percentage growth in use compared to pre-pandemic use, increasing by more than 300 percent compared to the week prior to the start of the fare promotion. Notably, 1-Day Promotional Pass growth was highly popular in low-income and minority community areas. The 3-Day and 7-Day Promotional Passes also experienced increased use. Weekly rides by customers using the 3-Day and 7-Day Promotional Passes increased by 44 percent and 75 percent, respectively, compared to May 2021.

The discounted passes have been a driving factor in helping new and existing riders save more money, and have also helped shape new travel habits. CTA analysis shows that since the start of the promotion, riders who switched from pay-per-ride to an unlimited-ride pass increased their ridership by nearly 70 percent, on average. This means that riders who switched to a promotional pass increased their ridership from 36 rides on average in the seven weeks before the promotional pass adoption to 59 rides on average in the seven weeks after. By comparison, riders who remained using only pay-per-ride rode nearly the same amount during that same time.

Pass sales also helped attract riders back to CTA and encouraged existing riders to ride more. CTA conducted an online survey on the promotional passes and found that 43 percent of respondents reported they rode a lot more with the pass and 20 percent of respondents reported that the pass got them riding CTA again.

CTA ridership has been steadily increasing since the start of the year, as riders return to transit for work and recreation. The promotional fares have played a vital role in encouraging ridership growth system-wide, which is now averaging 770,000 rides on weekdays.

The promotional pass products are a central component of the CTA’s When You’re Ready, We’re Ready campaign, a comprehensive ridership promotion effort launched in May to help attract new and returning transit riders.

The CTA is already the region’s most affordable transportation option, and the promotional fares offer even more value to customers. With the 1-Day Pass, customers can ride all day for the cost of one round-trip fare (which is $5 on trains, $4.50 on buses). The 3-Day Pass is ideal for weekend travel or employees working flexible days. And with the 7-Day Pass, customers essentially pay less than $3 per day for unlimited rides for the week and the weekend.

CTA’s promotional discount on these popular unlimited-ride passes will continue to be available through November 25.

The promotional fares are available for purchase at Ventra Vending Machines at CTA rail stations, on the Ventra app, on the Ventra website, at over 1,000 retail locations, or by calling Ventra customer service at (877) NOW-VENTRA (669.8368).

Chicago Tribunes,  12/28/21

A new report shows which CTA stations had the smallest pandemic drops in riders, and it could hold clues to transit’s future

As the COVID-19 pandemic sent CTA ridership plummeting, more riders continued taking the train in lower-income neighborhoods and in neighborhoods with more Black and Latino residents, a new report shows.

The Pulaski Blue Line station in West Garfield Park and the Conservatory Green Line station in East Garfield Park kept more riders than any other stations during the first year of the pandemic, retaining more than half their average daily riders, according to the data from the Urban Institute.

In contrast, the Merchandise Mart station downtown, which typically served many office commuters, saw the sharpest drop in its average daily riders between 2019 and 2020: about 74%.

SNIP

The Urban Institute report looked at train station boardings in 2019 and 2020 and neighborhood demographics for some of the country’s largest public transit systems. It found key differences in how ridership dropped during the pandemic, with smaller drops in neighborhoods with more Black and Latino residents, more lower-wage jobs and lower incomes. The largest drops were near job centers.

Service challenges posed by the pandemic

Since the start of the pandemic nearly two years ago, we've worked tirelessly to provide the essential transit service that the region relies on. When Chicago needed us the most, we were there, providing as much service as possible.

However, like every U.S. transit agency, the pandemic has impacted our agency. We have employees who are unable to come to work because of quarantining due to COVID-19.

Students, staff adjusting to CTA mask changes

Now that the mask mandates have been lifted on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), students are finding that it has become a challenge to navigate when to a wear a mask.  On April 19, 2022, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that masks would no longer be required on public transit or in travel hubs. This includes airports, trains, train stations and buses.
