The Transportation Agency of Monterey County is confident they can finally lure Caltrain officials to extend the commuter rail service down the Bay, south from its current terminus in Gilroy, all the way to Salinas.

The Transportation Authority of Monterey County (TAMC) has selected civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) as part of the construction management team for the initial phase of Salinas Rail Extension.

A long-sought Transportation Agency for Monterey County project aimed at bringing commuter train service to Monterey County from Silicon Valley has received a $10 million boost in SB 1 state gas tax funding, and the complicated project now expects to begin construction by next spring.

The ceremonial sledgehammer demolition that took place at the Salinas Train Station Thursday is part of a much larger breakthrough connecting Monterey County to the larger mass transit network in the San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding regions.

A long-stalled commuter rail extension project from Gilroy to Salinas is making critical progress, and finally has an estimated arrival time.
The idea for the Monterey County Rail Extension project – which would create a commuter train connection between Salinas and Gilroy – was hatched more than 20 years ago, and originally included a proposal to add stations in Castroville and Pajaro.
