WTOP radio, 1/21:

Women’s March on Washington kicks off today

WASHINGTON —  Hundreds of thousands were expected to flock to the nation’s capital for the Women’s March on Washington, a rally and march intended to advocate for civil rights, and participants did not disappoint.

WTOP’s Jenny Glick reported that the line for the first train at Penn Station in Baltimore was already several blocks long an hour before the train’s 7:30 departure. MARC trains running the Penn Line weekend service were seeing extra crowds.

End-of-the-line stations were experiencing surging crowds as of 8 a.m., prompting Metro officials to advise allowing extra time to buy rail tickets or considering stations further down the rail line. But few passengers attempting to catch a ride down the line could get embark, due to the already-packed nature of the trains.

As of 9 a.m., Vienna, East Falls Church, Greenbelt, Shady Grove, Wiehle Metro stations were at capacity. Rockville, Twinbrook West, Rhode Island, Forest Glen were almost full. Officials recommended College Park, Landover or Largo lots as alternatives.
