Day after Thanksgiving, I took the 7:40 out of KSS because I wanted to travel this rare mileage route during daylight.  I like to sleep in so it was a struggle to make it.  I had taken the evening train last year, but it was almost dark even upon leaving Tacoma/Freighthouse Square southbound.  So this year, I got a good look at the  route and its trackside environs.  I can tell you that when the Point Defiance bypass happens, Amtrak pax will be sorely disappointed.  Arguably the best scenery between Seattle and Portland will be bypassed itself--this the glorious water-level views of Puget Sound and adjacent islands as well as the twin Tacoma Narrows suspension bridges.  The inland route from Freighthouse Square to South Tacoma and Lakewood is flat out ugly.  Absolutely nothing of interest.  Only industrial roads, warehouses, cheap commercial buildings, abandoned manufacturing plants, and crummy houses and apartment buildings where they occur.  The inland route will shave off an estimated ten minutes of the SEA-PDX trip.  For most, it won't be worth it.  Perhaps south of Lakewood there will be an improvement in scenery.  The route will skirt, hopefully in view of, American Lake, which would be something, at least.  But with the route paralleling I-5 in spots, not the most scenic roadway, either!,  most will wish the old route could have been preserved.  Sound Transit owns the track between Freighthouse and Lakewood.  I'm not sure who owns or will own them between Lakewood and the junction with the BNSF main line at DuPont.
