Orlando Sentinel, 2/3/15:

SunRail expansion could be in trouble

SunRail's planned expansion south to Poinciana in Osceola County and north to DeLand in Volusia County by 2016 could be in peril.

President Barack Obama's budget, released Monday, does not include money for the expansion, and the commuter train still lags by 15 percent on its first-year goal of 4,300 passengers a day, even though ridership has spiked with the addition of a night run.

But three members of Central Florida's congressional delegation say they are not too worried.

Orlando Sentinel, 2/25/15:

SunRail expansion pushed back to summer 2017

The planned SunRail commuter-train expansion south into Osceola County and north to DeLand in Volusia County will be delayed by at least six months, pushing back the projected start date to the summer of 2017.

Difficulties in securing $126 million in federal grants are behind the delay, said Noranne Downs, the state Department of Transportation administrator in charge of SunRail.

Federal officials say SunRail managers failed to provide enough information on the system when seeking the money earlier this year. That dropped SunRail out of President Barack Obama's 2016 budget.

So another case of slipping dates.

I believe we have another race on our hands. Which will open first, SunRail Phase 2, or any phase of All Aboard Florida?

Global Rail News, 5/6/15:

SunRail to be extended to Osceola County

SunRail has received a federal grant to deliver phase two of the Central Florida passenger rail network south to Osceola County.

So according to this article, the expansion is still targeted for 2016.

Orlando's commuter rail gets funding to expand

Federal transportation officials say they will give $93.4 million to help extend central Florida's commuter rail to the southern section of the metro area.

The Federal Transit Administration on Monday said an agreement with the SunRail commuter service will help extend the line by more than 17 miles into Osceola County.

The Sun Rises On New
Connections, New Opportunities
in Central Florida

I was thrilled to be back in Central Florida this week on behalf of Secretary Foxx to sign a $93.4 million full funding grant agreement with SunRail. The Federal Transit Administration grant will support the 17.2-mile second phase of expanded commuter rail service from Southern Orlando into Osceola County.

And I was pleased to be joined by Congressman John Mica, Congressman Alan Grayson, and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer –three great champions for public transportation.

The new line will extend from south of Orlando through Kissimmee to Poinciana in Osceola County.  The project promises improved transit access to regional employment, entertainment, cultural, and retail destinations, including the Orlando Central Business District, and –through transit connections– to the Orlando International Airport, Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, and the Lake Nona mixed-use commercial community.

FTA’s contribution to SunRail for Phase II South will cover about half the cost of the extension. This worthwhile investment will bring more transportation options to even more people so they can access jobs, services, shopping, entertainment, and other destinations when service opens in 2019.

SunRail%20poster.JPG

The first phase, which opened more than a year ago, has already proven to be a useful way for people to get to work and special events, saving them time and money.

The line is also attracting new economic development, bringing in new jobs and opportunities. And, the Orlando Sentinel even published an article about how some riders are losing weight by walking the convenient distances from SunRail stations to the places they want to go!

Together, SunRail and FTA are improving the economic and physical health of the Central Florida region. This is one more reason that FTA is proud to be a partner in Central Florida’s bold vision for true 21st Century public transportation.

But the people of Central Florida have made it clear they want more: more transit options, with more frequent service, going to more destinations.  And when the main complaint is that people want more of what you’re offering, you’re on the right track.

To deliver more of the benefits of improved public transportation to Central Florida and other communities across America, we need Congress to pass a long-term surface transportation bill with adequate funding to build the transit networks this Nation needs.

Secretary Foxx has sent Congress such a bill —twice.  It’s called the GROW AMERICA Act, and it would boost federal funding for transit by 70 percent.

SunRail Phase II will help connect residents of Central Florida to jobs, education, medical care, and other services and opportunity.  With GROW, we can do even more to keep them connected.

Orlando, FL Business Journal, 10/1/15:

See how SunRail phase 2 south stations may shape up

We’re about a month or so away from the planned construction start on the southward extension of Central Florida’s $1.3 billion commuter rail and plans for parcels surrounding the four new stations are still in their infancy.

Feds nix money for SunRail stop in DeLand

SunRail managers learned Thursday they will not receive $35 million from the federal government to expand the commuter train system 13 miles north to DeLand in Volusia County, dealing a potentially lethal blow to the planned extension.

Florida loses funds to extend SunRail service to DeLand

The state of Florida learned Thursday that it didn't get the millions of dollars needed to extend SunRail service from DeBary to DeLand.

Not happy that this somehow has fallen through after being promised as part of Phase 2.  But I do agree that if Orange City would be a big ridership generator, it should have a station stop as well.
