MTA Gears Up For Weekend Snow Event

Steps Being Taken to Keep Rails Clear

Customer Call Center To Open on Saturday, December 19 from 6AM-6PM

Baltimore, MD (December 18, 2009) The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has mobilized its operations, maintenance and customer service staff to prepare for the substantial snow event that is predicted for the region this coming weekend. Local buses will operate on regular routes as scheduled; however, some routes may be diverted to designated snow emergency routes depending upon actual snow levels. Metro Subway and Light Rail maintenance crews will continuously monitor track and catenary wire conditions and remove snow and ice accumulation. When winter weather strikes, MTA regularly uses “snow trains” during overnight hours to keep tracks clear. These are Metro or Light Rail trains that will continue to move along tracks during late night/early morning hours when the systems are closed. Additionally, snow removal crews are prepared to remove snow and ice from Metro Subway and Light Rail parking lots and station entrances and sidewalks. Mobility will operate as close to its schedule as possible.

“The MTA is making the necessary preparations to cope with what is expected to be a heavy snowfall throughout the day on Saturday,” said MTA Administrator Ralign T. Wells. “We will be doing everything in our power to keep our bus and rail operations moving during the storm.”

Due to the expected storm, the MTA’s Customer Information Call Center will be open on Saturday, December 19th. The Call Center usually operates on a Monday thru Friday schedule. Customer service representatives will be available from 6:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Saturday to provide updated transit information at 410-539-5000 or 866-RIDE-MTA (TTY 410-539-3497).

Customers also can check the MTA website at www.mtamaryland.com for information on service disruptions, diversions, schedules and fares.

Attention Ravens Fans

Kick-off for today's game against the Chicago Bears is scheduled for 4:15 PM.

MTA is expecting regular Light Rail and Metro Subway service.

Crews are clearing parking lots and platforms but fans should anticipate
reduced parking due to snow accumulation. For Light Rail riders, overflow parking is available at the BWI Business District and Warren Road Light Rail stops.

MTA's Transit Information Center is open special hours today until 5 PM.
Call 410-539-5000 for assistance.

Light Rail service will run for at least one hour after the game ends tonight.
