The hits keep coming for the Atlanta Streetcar

The Georgia Department of Transportation is the latest agency to point out shortcomings in the operation of the Atlanta Streetcar.

Here's an "I told you so" editorial.

Gridlock Guy: My Atlanta streetcar predictions coming true

In November of 2010 while many in Atlanta were excited about the prospect of a brand new streetcar coming to downtown, I, in this very column, thought it was a bad idea and the money that was being used on the streetcar could be better used in other ways to help traffic in the city.

Atlanta Streetcar should have had private right-of-way for speedier service.  It is too slow operating in mixed traffic.  Sloan

The Atlanta Streetcar's Ongoing Battle with Media, Misconceptions

The Atlanta Streetcar is dead. At least that’s what major television and print outlets would have people believe.

That's all following a recent letter from the Georgia Department of Transportation that set an ultimatum for streetcar solutions for what it says are outstanding maintenance and staffing shortfalls.

Funny, the end of the above cited article mentions the DC Streetcar, but ignores the time it took to get that opened years after it was completed.

The Atlanta (GA) Journal Constitution, 6/28/16:

State withdraws threat to shut down Atlanta streetcar

The Georgia Department of Transportation has backed away from its threat to shut down Atlanta’s trouble streetcar.

In a letter to the city Tuesday, GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said the agency will continue reviewing Atlanta’s plans to fix dozens of problems outlined in recent audits. But he said GDOT is satisfied with the city’s recent progress after months of delay.

“We no longer anticipate issuing a cease operations order,” McMurry wrote to Atlanta officials. “However, it should be understood that additional clarification or content from the (streetcar) team may be required for full compliance.”

For Atlanta Streetcar, pessimism still abounds, though hope lives

Just when it seemed like the Atlanta Streetcar had turned a corner, figuratively speaking, a busload of pessimism has parked on the tracks.

Atlanta’s Streetcar Investment Is Not Paying Off

SNIP

The streetcar travels only 1.3 miles, from downtown to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, so it’s only useful for a limited variety of trips. It stops too frequently — six times over the course of its very short route — slowing service. And because the trains operate in lanes shared with cars, they average less than 10 mph on a good day; often, they get stuck at signals and behind cars, leading to delays and a high degree of unreliability.

The streetcar needs to have a longer route and operate in special precincts that allow the co-mingling of pedestrians and trolleys, but not autos.

Work remains to address Atlanta Streetcar audit

The Atlanta Streetcar was short-staffed. Safety and security procedures were lax. Accidents were not properly investigated or reported. Defective equipment disrupted service.
