Safety panel audits WMATA's rail-car program

 

The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WMSC) has issued an audit of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Metrorail revenue rail-car program.

 

The WMSC performed the audit through interviews, site visits and document and data reviews conducted in August and September 2023. Additional followup and document reviews were completed in October, November and December 2023.

 

The audit includes Metrorail’s maintenance and engineering practices related to rail cars, those vehicles designed to carry customers. It also includes associated shop equipment such as rail-car movers.

Watchdog report: Metro skipping some steps while inspecting railcars

 

An independent agency that oversees safety on Metro released an audit Tuesday that found the D.C. transit system has skipped some safety checks, including railcar inspections and precautions to protect personnel.

 

The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission conducted interviews, site visits and data reviews since December 2023 for the audit. Metro has 30 days to make plans that respond to the report’s findings and recommendations.

 

The report paints a picture of at times dysfunctional worksite operations, concluding Metro has been inconsistent in meeting its own procedural requirements for maintaining safety for both riders and its employees.

What the Metro safety watchdog report tells us
 
WMSC's latest report shows the WMATA agency did not follow its own safety procedures.
 
WASHINGTON — The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission released its latest railcar audit findings Tuesday, highlighting some glaring issues with following Metro’s own safety and procedural practices. 

 

Three years after its first audit of the railcar program, the WMSC released the new audit, finding seven issues in the program for WMATA to address.
