A lobbyist to fight to bring LRT tot heir town. that is a lobbyist I could support, I think. I know Whittier was once served by the Pacific Electric. It will be interesting if they are successful. Also, noticed in the article they mentioned the 60 Freeway. It might have been worth it to have had rail in the corridor, but possibly not along the freeway itself, yesterday.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will hold eight open houses and City Council briefings in May on the proposed Gold Line extension that will go from East Los Angeles to either Whittier or South El Monte.

An environmental impact report on the two competing routes is expected to be released this summer.

L.A. Curbed, 7/11/14:

Mayor Wants New Gold Line Extension to Go to Whittier

The environmental impact report for the Gold Line extension from East LA to either Whittier or El Monte is due in two weeks, and a final decision on the route is expected in the next few months. Mayor/Metro Chair Garcetti made some subtle nods to his preference for that route at a transpo forum this week in Claremont, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports.

Los Angeles, CA Wave, 8/29/14:

LACMTA unveils possible options for Gold Line extension

County transportation officials have released tentative plans for an extension of light rail passenger train service east of Los Angeles, and now affected cities are beginning to lobby for their route.

At issue is extending the southern leg of the Gold Line, which now runs from Union Station through Boyle Heights to a temporary terminus in East Los Angeles.

L.A. Curbed, 8/22/14:

First Look at Plan to Take the Gold Line to El Monte or Whittier

Today Metro released its huge draft environmental impact report on a plan to extend the Gold Line from East LA out to either Whittier or El Monte (via The Source). The meaty document on the Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 doesn't include a decision on whether to extend the Gold Line's southeastern terminus—at Atlantic and Pomona Boulevards in East LA—to Southeast LA (Whittier) or the San Gabriel Valley (South El Monte), but it does lay the groundwork for the Metro board to make a formal recommendation on the matter in November.

Story along with helpful maps here. And looking at said maps, it should be clear to you that these are not just two parallel alignments for a route to the east. The two options are very different, with one going almost due east, and the other being a leg to the south and then jogging southeast. The potential termini are far from one another. If both of these routes are in competition with one another and both worthy of such studies then chances are both are needed. They will have to come up with another precious color (or name in the case of Expo) and apply it to one of those lines.

Washington Boulevard route favored for proposed Gold Line extension at Whittier hearing

WHITTIER >> For Will Allen, a medically discharged Marine, it takes hours for him to get to medical appointments on the single bus line available to him.

Allen, of Whittier, was one of 125 people who filled the Uptown Whittier Senior Center on Tuesday night for a public hearing on the proposed eastside extension of the Gold Line light rail transit line.
