We're always playing with fire when we meet to ride trains in January. We have endured extreme cold, wind, some rain, and even some light snow in the past decade of having these Fests.
I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but a long range forecast on the Weather Channel as of Sunday evening 1/10 is indicating that next weekend could be a mess in New York. There is a low currently over the western states, that will bring heavy rains to Texas and the southern states, and then move up to the Northeast as a coastal low. Coupled with subfreezing temps we could get significant snow, or at very least heavy rains if it is warmer.
We should all keep on watching and sharing what we hear, but for now keep in mind that we may encounter something we've successfully dodged before. I've never cancelled a Fest, and it is not my intention to do so based on the fact that we have people travelling far to get there. We have our usual Midwest contingent, and this year also someone from Tennessee. So we're on.... but obviously our plans can be altered by train cancellations, states of emergency, etc. Plans could end up being watered down (ok poor choice of words) based on what is available (and safe) to ride.
