Progressive Railroading, 5/18/15:

TriMet's new line carries first passengers

In advance of its official public opening in September, the new Portland-Milwaukie light-rail line late last week carried its first passengers.

A project of the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), the new line counted Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, U.S. Sen Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and other elected officials as some of the first passengers along its 7.3-mile route between downtown Portland and north Clackamas County.

The old pat-yourself-on-the-back victory trip.  Remember outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg took a victory lap on the 7 train extension in Manhattan in December 2013, and a year and a half later we still don't know exactly when the line will open.

More here.

From TriMet website:

You asked: How will the MAX Orange Line work in Downtown Portland?

We’re often asked what happens after Orange Line trains go over Tilikum Crossing and enter Downtown Portland: Do they turn around at PSU? Do they become Yellow or Green line trains? Will I have to transfer to get to the Transit Mall?

Most MAX Orange Line trains will continue as Yellow Line trains in Downtown Portland. Most southbound Yellow Line trains will continue as Orange Line trains before reaching Union Station.

The latest about the upcoming Orange Line opening tells us that some bus routes will be rerouted to serve light rail stations, something expected whenever a new rail transit line opens.  I was not aware however that Tilikum Crossing is being opened to some bus routes as well; I thought it was going to be strictly MAX Orange Line and streetcars on the Central Loop.  Not sure why some buses will overlap the rail lines.  From TriMet blog, 7/1/15:

Ten bus lines that will change when the MAX Orange Line opens

A lot will change when the MAX Orange Line opens in September. Light rail reaching north Clackamas County means new ways of getting to work, family, friends and opportunity — even if you’re not taking a train.

Just for kicks.....  Regarding Post #12 above, with the map showing how the new route will integrate with the entire system.  Can you name the city where there also exists a light rail line that has two different designations on each of its ends, changing from one to the other downtown?  More useless points for you if you can name the route designations on either end.

Hint:  We rode it on a Fest, end to end over the entire "combined" route.  Let's see if you were paying attention, either when we rode it or if you didn't go, when you read the report.

If nobody gets this within a week I will reply back with the answer.

PORTLAND TriMet light rail opens its new downtown to suburban Milwaukie light rail line in a few weeks and an urban planners says the city must recognize that good transit will allow higher density development to avoid sprawl, according to an op-ed commentary posted by The Oregonian. Brina Campbell writes: "It starts with mixing uses in compact centers anservice, creating places where it's convenient to walk to stores, offices, schools and parks from where people live. ... New single-family homes are not the answer. They take up far too much land, are very inefficient and are costly to serve with streets, services.[sic]

The answer is San Francisco, where the K and T Muni Metro light rail lines are interlined downtown.

Hi, Rider!

On Saturday, August 22 we're taking over Zidell Yards and throwing the party of the summer!

firework-lg_crop.jpg

We're kicking things off at 5 p.m. with the Orange Picnic, so bring a basket filled with orange snacks (from carrots to Cheetos, anything goes) and a comfy chair.

Or hit up the on-site food carts and BridgePort beer garden, where you'll find treats like Salt & Straw's exclusive Olive Oil & Burnt Orange Marmalade ice cream and the new Tilikum Crossing Orange Line IPA!

Once the sun goes down, sit back and get ready for one of the biggest fireworks displays our region has ever seen!
