Progressive Railroading, 5/28:

Rail Runner anticipates opening never-used Zia rail station

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express is advancing plans to open a rail station at the intersection of Zia Road and St. Francis Drive, in Santa Fe, N.M., Rio Metro Regional Transit District (Rio Metro) announced this month.

The station was built in 2008, but never opened. The city has located a developer who will post a $150,000 bond to cover the design and construction of a nearby mixed-use development, which includes parking, a passenger drop-off area and improvements to ensure the station complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rio Metro officials said in a press release.

Rio Metro Regional Transit District news release 5/27:

Zia Rail Runner Station Update

There has been some movement in the process to open the Zia Rail Runner Station in Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Commission completed a study earlier this year, which found that traffic would continue to operate at acceptable levels with the station in operation.

In May 2015, the Santa Fe City Manager Brian Snyder, said the city is interested in moving forward with the station opening and they have found a developer who will post a $150,000 bond to cover the design and construction of a mixed-use development next to the station. Planned construction includes parking, a passenger drop-off area and improvements to be sure the station is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The timing of the stop at Zia has already been worked into the existing train schedule. “We’ve anticipated this station opening for quite some time,” said Rio Metro Transit Director Terry Doyle. “During the last schedule change, we added the time for the Zia station into the train schedule so we wouldn’t have to inconvenience our current riders with yet another major adjustment or additional time to their commute.”

A timeline for construction or completion of the work has not yet been set.
