Train dispatcher in Germany jailed over crash that killed 12

BERLIN (AP) -- A train dispatcher was convicted of negligent homicide and bodily harm on Monday over his role in the collision of two commuter trains in southern Germany earlier this year that killed 12 people and injured nearly 90. He was sentenced to 3½ years in prison.

The dispatcher, identified only as Michael P. in line with German privacy laws, has admitted playing a game on his phone shortly before the two trains he was in charge of collided on a single-track line on Feb. 9 near Bad Aibling, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Munich.

The Wall Street Journal, 12/5:

Deutsche Bahn Train Dispatcher Gets Jail Time For Role in Fatal Collision

A dozen people died in accident involving two trains

BERLIN--A Deutsche Bahn AG train dispatcher was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail time Monday for his role in the head-on collision of two passenger trains that left a dozen people dead earlier this year.

The district court in the Bavarian town of Traunstein found the dispatcher guilty of involuntary manslaughter and negligent bodily harm for his role in the crash that also injured 89 passengers, according to a spokeswoman for the court. The man had been playing a game on his cellphone when the two trains collided.

The sentence falls short of the maximum five-year sentence for manslaughter in Germany. In line with the country’s privacy rules, the court hasn't released the signal engineer’s name.

Deadly train accidents are relatively uncommon in Germany where an emergency-braking system blankets the country’s rails.
