Monitoring Tropical Storm Nicholas

Posted Date: September 13, 2021

To Our Customers,

Tropical Storm Nicholas is expected to make landfall across the South Texas coast today and is expected to make a path through Houston and southwest Louisiana over the next few days. We are monitoring conditions and have already taken steps to ensure potential outages are addressed as quickly as possible, including:

  • Staging ballast and generators at strategic locations
  • Having private contractors on call to support network outages
  • Positioning track inspectors ahead of trains following flash flooding events

Plans are also in place to suspend local operations temporarily at the Settegast and Englewood intermodal ramps in the Houston area effective at 18:00 CDT this evening until tomorrow morning, Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 09:00 CDT.

To ensure you are properly prepared for the upcoming storm, please visit our Hurricane Planning and Recovery page, which outlines best practices to follow during the hurricane season.

We will provide updates as this weather system progresses. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care & Support at 800-XXX-XXXX or your Union Pacific representative.

Tropical Storm Nicholas – Update on Operations

Posted Date: September 14, 2021

To Our Customers,

Tropical Storm Nicholas made landfall southwest of Houston early this morning, initially as a Category 1 hurricane. Following is a summary of current conditions:

  • The inspection process continues on impacted areas of our network. Our Track, Bridge and Signal Teams have spent the day clearing debris from the track and evaluating our signaling systems.
  • Generators are being utilized in areas without power. Impacted locations experiencing some outages include Houston, Galveston, Angleton and Freeport, Texas.
  • Intermodal operations at our Settegast and Englewood intermodal ramps commenced this morning.

Customers in the affected area with facilities or tracks out of service should open a case in Case Management. Please refer to the detailed instructions on our Hurricane Planning and Recovery page so we are aware of these outages.

We are closely monitoring the storm as it moves across central and southern Louisiana.

Thank you for your patience as we work to safely restore operations. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care & Support at 800-XXX-XXXX or your Union Pacific representative.
