Isable Update for MARC Riders, 9/16, 11:48 a.m.

The NOAA forecasts for Isabel continue to slow up the pace of the storm and move its landing point further south than the Outer Banks. The storm center may not be to the Charlottesville area until Thursday evening. However NOAA cautions that all computer models do not agree and a small change could bring the storm over the Washington area directly. Complete detailed maps and discussions are available at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml?

As of 1130AM on Tuesday it appears that normal service will operate on Thursday on all lines. We will continue to monitor the latest information carefully and advise you of any changes and possible Friday service changes.

MARC and Hurricane Isabel

9/16/03, 5:22 p.m.

Dear MARC Riders:

MARC Train Service continues to coordinate with both Amtrak and CSX in monitoring Hurricane Isabel. The latest projected path of the hurricane is now taking a more westerly path but the projections can change and it is still anticipated that there will be high winds in the region and serious flooding of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. MARC will coordinate again tomorrow morning with both Amtrak and CSX with the latest weather projections and make a decision on what service will be operated for Thursday. A key factor in this decision is the timing of when the storm will impact the region. Of particular concern is the storm hitting the region in the middle of the day and impacting our ability to operate trains in the afternoon. MARC plans to make an announcement early tomorrow afternoon on service for Thursday.

MARC has received numerous inquiries on what alternative service will be provided should MARC service be suspended due to the pending hurricane. There are no plans for alternative service specifically bus options should train service be suspended.

If conditions warrant the suspension of MARC Train service it is anticipated that road conditions will also be very dangerous. Consequently with the safety of our passengers in mind, we do not want to operate buses in such dangerous conditions.

Additionally, MARC is reliant on both public and private contractors to provide any alternative bus service. During the upcoming storm public transit providers are going to be focused on addressing the needs of their customers and will not be able to provide additional coverage for MARC. Private contractors operate at their own discretion. If conditions are unsafe and private contractors decide not to operate, MTA and MARC have no authority over these contractors.

Please monitor our website at www.matamaryland.com or look for additional emails through our email notification system for updates on our service during the hurricane.

Sincerely

MARC Train Service
