Isabel Update

Are you one of the many people who have become an amateur meteorologist? Yes? Us, too...

At VRE, we are keeping tabs on Isabel, especially what effects it may have on our commuter service. Conditions continue to change from hour to hour. VRE is closely watching the storm and its potential effects on our service. Currently, Isabel has been downgraded to category 2 and it is expected to make landfall further south than originally predicted. If this is true, that will delay the effect of the storm in our area. Details on the storm may be found at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov .

We are working with CSX and Norfolk Southern to determine our best course of action for Thursday and Friday service. Both railroads report that they have taken steps to deal with situations along the rail as they occur. Their preparations include having generators, chainsaws and special personnel on hand in strategic locations just in case.

We will make a decision on Thursday a service plan by 6:00p Wednesday afternoon, although right now there is a high probability we will operate full service. HOWEVER, as things to change, PLEASE check with us to be certain. Updates will be posted in Train Talk, on our website at http://www.vre.org/service/isabel.htm, through the local media.

Preparing for Isabel

By now, everyone is stocking up on essential supplies and getting ready for the worst. We found some sites that we thought might be helpful for you.

The National Hurricane Center has some good tips (some in conjunction with FEMA) on how to prepare for a plan, what to have in your disaster kit, and when to evacuate. Take some time to look at what you may need to do to ensure that you are well prepared. http://www.nhc.noaa....ish/intro.shtml

Should you need to evacuate, don't leave your pets at home. Be sure to include them in your disaster plan. There are many sites available that can help you locate pet friendly hotels should need to leave your home. Two that we found are http://www.petswelcome.com and http://www.pets-allowed-hotels.com. (Can you tell we like animals here? (-: )
