Brunswick residents press rail officials for more details on proposed Amtrak layover facility

PORTLAND, Maine — For the first time in more than a year, operators of the Amtrak Downeaster passenger rail service met with an advisory group on Tuesday to discuss the layover and maintenance facility planned in Brunswick.

Construction of the $12 million project is tentatively scheduled to start in November, pending an environmental review by the U.S. Federal Rail Administration that is expected to be completed within the next two months.

Mass Transit, 9/25/13:

Noise and vibrations created by a proposed Amtrak layover facility in Brunswick would not exceed federal noise guidelines, according to an environmental assessment submitted to the federal government by the agency that operates the Downeaster passenger rail service.

Decision for Amtrak is a ‘huge’ win

The Federal Railroad Administration has found that a proposed layover facility for Amtrak trains and crews will have no significant environmental impact on a Brunswick neighborhood.

Bangor, ME Daily News column, 8/3/14:

Contrary to popular belief, construction of Brunswick train depot hasn’t been given the green light

Readers of the BDN know that the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, an agency of Maine state government, has been planning to build a 60,000-square-foot maintenance and layover facility for Downeaster train sets in the “Brunswick West” residential neighborhood.

Our View: LePage administration goes off track on Amtrak layover facility in Brunswick

When Paul LePage first ran for governor, in 2010, he emphasized that he wanted to target unnecessary government red tape and interference. That’s why it’s easy to be surprised by the extent to which the LePage administration has inserted itself into the approval process for the proposed Amtrak Downeaster layover building.

Portland, ME Press-Herald, 8/30/14:

Maine DEP chief requests oversight of Amtrak plan for Brunswick layover facility

The increasingly political fight over plans to build an Amtrak maintenance facility near a Brunswick neighborhood ratcheted up a notch this week when the commissioner of Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection moved to take personal oversight of the project’s approval.

Saga continues.
