The Regional Transportation Council on Thursday approved a funding package that all but ensures the Fort Worth Transportation Authority will have modern, sleek rail cars for the proposed TEX Rail/Cotton Belt line, if the service opens as scheduled in 2016.

FORT WORTH, Texas — The T’s board approved the purchase of eight Stadler Bussnang AG self-propelled diesel railcars to operate on the proposed 27-mile TEX Rail commuter line, which is set to launch around 2018, the Star-Telegram reported.

The system would carry an estimated 10,000 or more passengers per day from downtown Fort Worth to Grapevine and Dallas/ Fort Worth Airport’s Terminal B.

The T board also agreed to a contract with a firm to handle preparations for TEX Rail construction, which could begin next year, approved the purchase of several properties to make way for the project, and OK’d a final design contract for two stations in North Richland Hills. Fort Worth's The T set to sign contract for TEX Rail cars

 

Later today, Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T) officials are scheduled to sign a contract with Stadler Bussnang AG for the manufacture and delivery of eight diesel multiple units (DMUs) for the proposed 27-mile TEX Rail commuter line.

Note that they are ordering eight 4-car FIIRT DMUs, not the GTW cars used on the A-Train by the DCTA. Here is Stadler's current catalog of vehecles.

Stadler is also planning to establish a US manufacturing plant. The site selection will be made this summer. One possible location would be next to the DCTA's maintenance base in Lewisville.

Also NCTCOG, the regional planning organization, has decided that these FLIRTs will be the standard DMUs for any future commuter train operation in the area.

I haven't yet seen the Austin or Denton operations in person, but I assume these cars are more like those used in Austin by Cap Metro for their Metrorail line to Leander.

I at first thought it would be the GTW, because of it's use in Austin and Denton. Looks like it will be the FLIRT. Better to get the improved model.

It appears that the Stadler assembly plant in the U. S. will be in Salt Lake City.
