LIRR update for Monday:

LIRR Will Be Running Near-Normal Weekday Service On Most Branches for Monday AM Peak
Ten Train Cancellations Are Planned and Customers Should Anticipate Some Weather-Related Delays and Should Allow for Extra Travel Time

Train service on the Long Island Rail Road will operate on a nearly-normal weekday schedule on most branches tomorrow, Monday, February 11, with some cancellations planned.

Ten trains will be cancelled in the AM (out of 143 normal AM rush hour trains). Customers can find the list of 10 cancellations by referring to ‘Modified Schedule 1,’ which can be found on the LIRR Website here. It is one of four modified schedules adopted by the LIRR last year and posted permanently on the LIRR website so that customers are aware in advance which trains are running as the Railroad recovers from a major storm like Nemo, which dumped up to 30 inches on parts of Long Island.

Customers are urged to allow extra time for travel on Monday because scattered weather related delays are likely as the LIRR continues to recover from the storm. Some of the LIRR’s trains, yards, switches and tracks were buried under two feet or more of snow. LIRR employees have worked around the clock to clear the equipment, track and stations. But customers should use caution because some station platforms and walkways remain icy.

The LIRR will be offering customers near normal weekday train service on nine of its 11 branches, including its City Zone and the Babylon, Port Washington, Port Jefferson, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Hempstead, West Hempstead and Oyster Bay Branches.

In the AM, the LIRR will not run trains east of Speonk on the Montauk or east of Ronkonkoma to Greenport. Roads to Greenport reportedly are currently not passable so busing between Ronkonkoma to Greenport will only occur if roads have been cleared. There will be no busing on the Montauk Branch.

‘Kiss & Ride’

Parking may be an issue at some LIRR stations in Suffolk that have not been plowed although LIRR has brought in extra LIRR forces and private contractors to clear at least some of Ronkonkoma parking areas prior to AM rush. That effort is continuing. Customers are advised to consider getting a lift to their LIRR station in the AM to avoid parking hassles.

See list of LIRR stations where lots have been cleared of snow and parking is available.

Under Modified Schedule 1, the following 10 trains that normally run on weekday mornings will be cancelled.

Lessons Learned on Being Informed During Major Outages

The best way to be prepared for the unexpected is to be informed.

The LIRR urges customers to:
* Sign up for free email or text message service updates.
* Visit our website for periodic service updates.
* Listen to the radio and television news: During any storm or emergency, this is the fastest way to find out how train service is affected. We will continuously provide information to the media.
* Call our Travel Information Center by dialing 511 and saying "LIRR". The Travel Information Center will be fully staffed, and there will also be a taped message describing our current service conditions. Please be aware that the volume of calls at the Travel Information Center will dramatically increase during a weather emergency, and you may experience delays getting through.
* Make sure you pick up a current LIRR timetable, as it will provide you with a frame of reference for train departure times at your station if severe weather requires us to run other than our normal schedule.
* At Your Station, listen closely for public address announcements if you are in Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal, or at a station on one of our branches.
* Depending on weather and service conditions, Long Island Rail Road employees will be on hand to answer questions about service and, if necessary, alternative means of travel.

The Metro North plan for Tuesday 2/12/13:

MTA Service Advisory
Close to Regular Service in Effect on the New Haven Line to/from South Norwalk; Expanded 75% of Regular AM-Peak Service in Effect From South Norwalk to New Haven

Metro-North is operating a regular weekday schedule today, Tuesday February 12th, on the Hudson & Harlem Lines.

Restoration of service on the New Haven Line continues with close to regular service in effect to/from South Norwalk. From South Norwalk to New Haven we are operating a schedule with 75% of regular AM Peak Service. (See a schedule.)

Regular New Canaan and Danbury Branch service is in effect.

Regular Off-Peak service is in effect. Please expect possible train cancellations and combinations.

Service will remain suspended on the Waterbury Branch until further notice. No substitute bus service will be provided.

This schedule will be in effect until 3 PM Tuesday.

Since many roads remain closed in the New Haven area, many train crews are having difficulty reporting to New Haven yard in order to operate train service. With parts of the line still buried under four feet of snow, there is also limited track and yard availability.

Also, while the M8s are performing well, they only make up roughly 50% of our fleet. Our older train cars remain susceptible to the effects of the snow, creating equipment shortages. Metro-North employees continue to conduct aggressive snow clearing operations in the New Haven and Bridgeport yards and to clear track switches that allow trains to change from one track to another.

Trains may be crowded. Please take care when traveling and allow for additional travel time. Customers should use caution when entering and exiting trains, and on platforms and staircases.

We urge customers to monitor media reports and to check this web site for the latest updates.

And if you go to the source page and scroll past the above message, there are photos of the snowed-in yards in Bridgeport and New Haven.

As of late Monday night/Tuesday morning, this is what seems to be the last update for LIRR, as the last pieces of the puzzle are being put into place with the return of the eastern Long Island trains to both forks (Greenport and Montauk).

LIRR Service Update

Full service has been restored on the Montauk and Ronkonkoma branches. Earlier, train service was suspended east of Speonk and Ronkonkoma.

LIRR Resumes Normal Service Tuesday On All Branches

MTA Long Island Rail Road will resume a normal weekday schedule Tuesday on all 11 branches, with the restoration of train service to Montauk and Greenport. The restoration made possible by successful snow clearing efforts by LIRR crews following Friday’s storm that dumped up to 30 inches of snow across much of Eastern Long Island.

LIRR crews have been clearing snow, switches, checking signals and grade crossing equipment around the clock since the storm. Normal weekday service was restored Monday to nine of 11 LIRR branches.
