Of note in this article is that the All Aboard Florida target date has slipped already from 2014 to 2015. Also, there is no mention of Amtrak using these tracks as well for its intercity trains, possibly a branch of the existing Silver Service trains. Focus has shifted to the AAF private enterprise. But obviously a Tri Rail Coastal commuter service would be a good feeder to Amtrak as well, just as people take TriRail now to get to the shared TriRail/Amtrak stations.

Would you use a commuter rail running through South Florida’s downtown centers?

South Florida is hashing out the future of a passenger rail service in the region, and now come new questions. Will the region get commuter trains running through its coastal downtown centers? What will the service look like, and how much will it cost?

Miami, FL Herald, 4/28/14:

Aventura likes new commuter train plan, if it doesn’t snarl auto traffic

Aventura commissioners say they support a proposed new commuter rail line serving South Florida’s coastal cities, but they’re concerned about how passenger trains would impact traffic on already busy streets such as Miami Gardens Drive and Ives Dairy Road.

Story here.

Four cities aboard new commuter rail

While a regional funding source for a proposed 85-mile commuter rail line linking Miami to Jupiter hasn’t been pinpointed, plans for locating the funds have moved forward – albeit slightly.

West Palm Beach, FL Post, 7/19/14:

Backlash against All Aboard Florida jeopardizes funding

Tens of millions of dollars needed to connect a future commuter line through South Florida’s historic downtowns with a grand Miami hub is in jeopardy because of the project’s ties with All Aboard Florida.

Miami Today, 4/30/14:

We might get 6 commuter rail stations

Eastern Miami-Dade might become home to six train stations if work on a commuter rail chugs forward and Tri-Rail Coastal Link begins service in 2020 as planned.

Tri-Rail moving ahead with coastal railroad expansion

A plan to expand Tri-Rail service would deliver commuters smack in the center of downtowns from West Palm Beach to Miami.

Map of TriRail system post opening of the Coastal Link shows three distinct lines, with a little overlap in some spots. Three color coded routes will run, with convenient transfers for those travelling between points not on the same line.
