NS Intermodal Service Alert:

Gate Closures for Charleston, SC

Oct 05, 2015

Due to recent weather events including flash flooding and record rainfall, the NS line into and out of Charleston, SC has experienced significant damage and is currently inoperable.  A number of track washouts, bridge outages, and other weather-related issues have been reported across South Carolina, and NS personnel are currently on-site to assess the full extent of damage.  We anticipate it will be Friday before service to Charleston is restored.

In order to ensure fluid operations at our inland terminals, effective 12:00 noon local time today, Monday, October 5th, all gates will be closed for traffic destined to Charleston, SC.  While there is no service out of Charleston, we are currently still accepting traffic in the gate for outbound loading.

The following trains originating in Atlanta will be staged enroute to Charleston:

  • 238-03 held at Greer, SC
  • 238-04 will be staged in Greenville, SC

NS will continue to monitor the situation and will reopen the gates to this traffic as conditions warrant.  We appreciate your patience on this matter and apologize for any inconvenience.

If you have any further questions, please contact your NS Intermodal Marketing representative.

NS Intermodal Service Alert:

Charleston Intermodal Service Update

Oct 07, 2015

As reported in our service alert earlier this week, the NS lines in the State of South Carolina suffered significant damage as a result of the historic rainfall that hit the area in recent days. Our crews have been working diligently over the past few days to inspect the tracks for damage and performing the work necessary to get that part of our network operational again.

  • Several line segments in the state have been brought back on line, but the main Intermodal route between Charleston and Spartanburg remains out of service
  • At this time, we anticipate that we will have a detour route in service about noon on Friday and will resume service to/from Charleston at that time. The detour route will be Charleston – Columbia – Charlotte - Spartanburg
  • In preparation for this, units on our Charleston terminal will be loaded to car starting at midnight tonight and will be ready to depart as soon as service is restored.  We are also moving inbound Charleston containers that were held en route closer to the detour route so that they are staged and ready to move
  • It is expected that this detour route will add about 12 hours of transit time to our normal schedules
  • We will likely continue to use the detour route for  2 – 3 weeks while portions of our line between Columbia and Spartanburg are rebuilt
  • We will further information regarding reopening our terminal gates to Charleston destined traffic and train movements as details become available

We greatly appreciate the patience and cooperation we have received from our customers over the past several days. Should you have any further questions, please contact your Intermodal Marketing representative.

NS Intermodal Service Alert:

Charleston Intermodal Service Mainline Update

Nov 06, 2015

On October 9th, we began to use a detour route for trains traveling to/from Charleston in an effort to restore service to the terminal. The main route was impaired by historic rainfall and flooding associated with Hurricane Joaquin. Recent rainfall has hindered our recovery efforts and we now expect to have this route operational by November 20th.

As a reminder, the detour route (Charleston – Columbia – Charlotte – Spartanburg) adds approximately 12 hours of transit time to our normal schedules.
