Everyone, we decided to merge the threads regarding the mudslides into one, since much discussion regarding passenger trains through the affected area deals with both Amtrak and Sounder.  However should we get news items related to BNSF as well, this will be moved to the Miscellaneous Railroad News & Info forum.

Torrential, soaking rains yesterday, today and tomorrow almost guarantee more slides in the coming days. All entities involved are trying to get a handle, but with most of the route between Seattle and Everett hemmed in by sometimes steep slopes on the landward side, we can expect more of this for the foreseeable future.

A mudslide Wednesday evening south of Everett has blocked the railroad tracks, affecting passenger rail service.

According to initial reports, slide debris hit a Sounder train (empahsis added) around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said. The train has stopped, but will be moving within an hour to offload passengers. The track is expected to reopen at 9:30 p.m.

A 48-hour moratorium is in place for all passenger rail service, which includes both Amtrak and Sounder trains, between the King Street Station in Seattle and Everett, Melonas said

The entire West Coast is getting slammed by the same monster storm, so we might see similar slides happen on Sounder South and along the Cascades route south of Seattle, and maybe even the Coast Starlight route through Oregon and northern California.
