MBTA mulls layoffs to close projected $110 million deficit

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is considering laying off workers to close a potential $110 million deficit in fiscal year 2017, which began July 1.

Declining sales tax revenue, which is expected to generate $32 million less than originally anticipated, is partly to blame for the shortfall, local media reported.

MBTA cuts 25 staffers, says more may follow

 

 

The MBTA laid off more than two-dozen workers this week as part of a plan to cut into a looming $80 million deficit, shedding employees from customer service, its treasurer’s office and other areas, an official confirmed.

 

T officials indicated that more layoffs could be in the offing beyond the 25 workers, but how much they save on this latest round will depend on how many apply to take other union positions, an option for those with collective bargaining.

 

Fourteen employees worked in customer service and marketing, including some in the T’s call center, which the agency is currently soliciting bids to outsource to a private company.
