Albany, NY Times-Union, 1/20/14:

When will the ground be broken for the new Schenectady Amtrak train station?

The new station, when and if it will be built, will replace the old 1970s station with a classical station that will be a shot in the arm for the region.

2017?? It needs it now. I was just there today, and it's the basic circa-1970's Am-Shack. To call the elevator there is a sign that says one needs to hold the button in until it gets there, and then once inside it's amazingly slow, so slow that if you were close to departure time you might finally get off the elevator to see your train already left. Maybe it's suitable for the number of trains that call there, but with the vast improvements the CDTA did to stations at Albany-Rensselaer and Saratoga Springs, they can make this a perfect trifecta.

The new Schenectady station and the new Albany-Schenectady track will both be very helpful in eliminating some delays, but the third part of the equation is to put in the 4th station track that the new Albany station accommodated for when it was built. Time gained on the new track going eastbound could be lost waiting for a slot at the Albany station. With overall delays being commonplace, and with each Lake Shore Limited needing multiple tracks to either join or split the two sections, there is simply not enough capacity there especially if the eastbound gets there around the time the westbound should be there.

Schenectady Amtrak station project to begin this summer

A new train station for downtown Schenectady, on the drawing board since 2007, is expected to take shape starting this summer.

The first part of the project will be construction of a temporary station, to be located north of the station on the west side of the tracks along Erie Boulevard.

Shame that one cannot read any more of this item without registration. I'd like to comment more but can't without seeing the whole thing.  I can't immediately search for a suitable alternative, but perhaps somebody else can.

Just from the one paragraph we can see, yes it's been seemingly forever that this has been in the works.  The Schenectady station is the third in the Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA) threesome that also includes Albany-Rensselaer and Saratoga Springs, with the latter two having received their rehabilitations years ago.
