Landslide near Canada-U.S. border shuts down rail traffic until Friday

A landslide in South Surrey, B.C., has shut down Amtrak train service between Vancouver and Seattle.

 

Amtrak said BNSF, which owns the railway, has suspended passenger railway traffic on the tracks until Friday, March 31. Amtrak said it is providing buses to service the route while it remains closed.

 

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said freight trains, of which there are about 12 per day carrying goods, ranging from lumber and agricultural products to chemicals, resumed at 1 p.m. PT Wednesday. 

 

He said there had been one larger slide, alongside two smaller ones.

Update: Sounder north line service is canceled due to a mudslide

 

Sounder north line special bus service information for tonight’s commute along with the regularly scheduled bus service is listed below.

 

If there are no additional blocking events, service will resume Sunday April 16th for the Mariners Special Event Train. Please monitor http://www.soundtran...le/rider-alerts for updates to Sounder north line service prior to Sunday’s Event Train and Monday morning’s commute.

 

All special buses will allow pre-boarding at 5th Ave S & Weller St (facing south) and will then depart from 4th Ave S & S Jackson St at the times listed below.

 

Seattle - Edmonds: Departing 4th Ave S & S Jackson at 4:05 pm, 4:33 pm, 5:05 pm and 5:35 pm. Riders may also board regularly scheduled Community Transit Route 416 at 5th and James at 3:57 pm, 4:27 pm, 4:58 pm, 5:31 pm and 5:57 pm

Mudslides halt rail traffic between Seattle and Portland

 

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- Officials with BNSF Railway say mudslides have forced the suspension of train traffic on a heavily traveled section of rails between Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.

 

Gus Melonas, spokesman for the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, says early Friday that 10 slides just north of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge have halted rail traffic. The multiple slides came hours after a series of thunderstorms rolled through western Washington.
