Hurricane Ida

Aug 29, 2021

Norfolk Southern is monitoring Hurricane Ida, a major hurricane impacting the Gulf Coast, specifically Southern Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. Flood gates in New Orleans are closed including those gates that affect Norfolk Southern operations and are expected to remain closed at least through Monday, August 30th.  Operations in New Orleans and into the Southeast will be impacted as the storm comes ashore bringing high winds, flooding and power outages. Norfolk Southern is working with our interline partners to detour traffic through alternative gateways where possible.

Norfolk Southern implemented precautionary actions to protect infrastructure, and rail equipment was repositioned away from low-lying areas. Additionally, Norfolk Southern Terminals in New Orleans are closed through Monday, August 30th.  Customers with shipments destined to or through this affected area should expect delays up to 48 - 72 hours.

Norfolk Southern will provide updates as conditions change.

Customers with critical service needs should contact NS Customer Service at . . .

Hurricane Ida Update

Aug 30, 2021

Norfolk Southern continues to monitor the impact of Tropical Depression Ida as it moves northeast through our system. Norfolk Southern’s engineering department is evaluating storm impact across the affected area and forming plans to return to normal operation as soon as it is safe to do so. There are widespread commercial power outages affecting signal systems, flooding in some areas remains and trees and other debris must be cleared from our tracks. The Intermodal Terminal in New Orleans will remain closed through Tuesday, August 31, and local operations will be affected as the recovery effort continues. Norfolk Southern will work with our partners to identify opportunities to detour interline traffic through alternative gateways where possible.  Customers with shipments destined to or through this area should expect delays up to 48 - 72 hours.

Norfolk Southern will provide updates as conditions change.

Hurricane Ida Update

Sep 02, 2021

Norfolk Southern continues to monitor the impacts of Hurricane Ida in the New Orleans area. We plan on resuming interchange operations today. Local operations in New Orleans and Mobile have resumed but continue to be affected as recovery efforts continue. The Intermodal Terminal in New Orleans will remain closed through the remainder of the week.  Norfolk Southern continues to work with our partners to identify opportunities to detour interline traffic through alternative gateways where possible.

The remnants of the storm are also impacting the northeastern part of NS’ network, with widespread flooding, commercial power outages, and downed trees and powerlines blocking mainline routes to the greater New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Norfolk Southern’s engineering department is evaluating storm impacts across the affected area and forming plans to return to normal operation as soon as it is safe to do so.  Customers with shipments destined to or through these areas should expect delays up to 48 - 72 hours. Norfolk Southern will provide updates as conditions change.

Hurricane Ida Update

Sep 03, 2021

Norfolk Southern continues to work through the impacts of Hurricane Ida. NS has resumed regular operations in New Orleans, but there continues to be delays due to slow orders and signal issues. Interchanges are open with the exception of the interchange to Canadian National which is still blocked and we are working with our partners through the backlog. In New Jersey and New York, flood waters have receded in many locations overnight though there are still locations that are unavailable due to flooding and slow orders as final debris and signal issues are repaired. Customers with shipments destined to or through these affected areas should expect delays up to 48 - 72 hours. Norfolk Southern will provide updates as conditions change.
