The Altamont Corridor Express passenger train service, which now runs between Stockton in the Central Valley and San Jose in Silicon Valley, is planning to expand.

The project includes improving existing service and extending new ACE rail service to downtown Modesto by as early as 2018 and to Merced by as early as 2022.

Federal Legislation May Help California's Altamont Corridor Express Train

Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, announced Thursday he has introduced legislation that could bring as much as $450 million over the next decade to speed up rail service between Stockton and the Silicon Valley and bring other changes to the Altamont Corridor Express.

Modesto, CA Bee, 12/14/15:

Modesto ACE train extension might not leave the station

Hopes for Bay Area-bound passenger trains from the Modesto area appear to have lost steam.

Money from a transportation tax across Stanislaus County, if approved by voters in November, primarily should be used on potholes and other neighborhood street repairs, with some reserved for new highways, most people said in an October poll gauging support for increasing the sales tax.

There's your story.

RT&S, 12/8/21

Altamont Corridor Express extension in Calif. receives second environmental clearance

The Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) extension project in California just received a significant stamp of approval.

The San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission has approved the final environmental impact report for the section covering Turlock to Merced.

The recent approval follows the OK in the fall for stations in Manteca, Ripon, Modesto, and Ceres. Design work has already started for those stops. The ACE will commute residents to Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.

Train service in Ceres could begin as early as 2023, while some other stops will not be active until 2025.

Continue here.

The Modesto (CA) Bee, 5/1/24

Modesto’s delayed ACE rail service could get a jump start with temporary station

Modesto restored its 1915 downtown depot in anticipation of the Altamont Corridor Express. But the first trains might stop at a site that’s not so charming.

The planned passenger platform has been tricky to design because of utility lines in the freight corridor that ACE will share. Officials are thinking instead of building a temporary platform half a mile north at Needham Street, a mostly industrial zone.

That could help ACE meet its goal of a 2026 start of service to Stanislaus County.  . . .

Continue here with audio article and video clip of restored station.
