King Street Transit Pilot Overview

The King Street Transit Pilot between Bathurst Street and Jarvis Street aims to improve transit reliability, speed, and capacity. The Pilot is changing how King Street works by not allowing private vehicles through intersections and instead giving priority to streetcars.

Toronto, ON Star, 11/8/17:

Street overhaul that puts transit first set to launch on King St.

A bold plan to improve public transit is coming to King St. this month, and while city officials hope the overhaul will make it easier to move people through the congested downtown core, they acknowledge drivers and transit users are going to need some time to adapt.

Column in Toronto, ON Star, 11/13/18:

King St. streetcar project is no solution for congestion woes

Data shmata.   Which is my usual nose-flip to the meteor shower of analytics that has ruined sports.

But the subject today is the King St. streetcar pilot project, a hell-bent undertaking that appears autopilot destined to be extended into permanency when the yearlong experiment concludes — technically hitting its anniversary this past Monday, an occasion marked by profusely glowing reviews by media, public transit activists, cycling zealots and bureaucrats.

Here is the complete column.

BlogTO, 10/7/22:

People complain that Toronto's King Street transit corridor is completely falling apart

Despite some initial pushback in its early days, the King Street Pilot — known as the King Street Transit Priority Corridor now that it's permanent — was at one point a resounding success, by all accounts.

CBC, 12/16/22:

What happened to the King Street transit corridor? Pundits say there's no enforcement of redesign

A Toronto city councillor and a public transit advocate say a stretch of King Street West should make streetcar traffic a priority again and the city should explain why the busy downtown corridor is now crawling with cars.
