Union Station concourse makeover starts this year

WASHINGTON — A major expansion and redesign of Union Station’s often crowded, sometimes chaotic, passenger concourse gets underway this summer, though it won’t be fully complete until 2019.

The “Passenger Concourse Modernization Project” is part of Union Station’s 2nd Century Plan, an improvement initiative that includes multiple projects with a goal of tripling passenger capacity and doubling train capacity over the next 20 years.

The Washington Post,3/30:

Amtrak unveils $50 million solution to cramped conditions at Union Station

Amtrak will nearly double the size of the passenger concourse at Union Station as part of a renovation project that will begin this summer.

The north wall on the concourse level of the 109-year-old station in Northeast D.C. will be pushed back for a 20,000-square-foot addition. With the expansion — which should be completed by 2019 — will come new restrooms, departure gates, seating and a ClubAcela Lounge. A glass wall on the north end will add natural light to the typically dark concourse.

Amtrak renovation of D.C.'s Union Station to double capacity

Amtrak is advancing a near-term comprehensive renovation of Washington Union Station’s intercity and commuter rail concourse, which will add approximately 20,000 square feet of new passenger space — nearly doubling the concourse’s current capacity.

Design is underway to upgrade passenger amenities including new restrooms, boarding gates, seating and a ClubAcela lounge. The design will also include new architectural features and natural light elements to enliven the space for travelers. The result will be a vastly reconfigured, modernized and unified concourse that will improve the passenger experience by providing better accessibility, circulation, wayfinding and multimodal connectivity.

The Concourse Modernization project will be the first set of improvements to come to life as part of Washington Union Station’s 2nd Century plan,  .  .  .

Amtrak taking bids for major Union Station makeover

WASHINGTON — Amtrak is one step closer to what will be a major renovation of its busy and sometimes chaotic passenger concourse at Union Station.

It is part of Amtrak’s $2.45 billion investment in the Northeast Corridor, which will also eventually include faster and more frequent Acela service.

Amtrak this month issued a Request for Qualifications as part of a two-phase process to select a contractor to modernize what is officially called the Clayton Concourse.

Work is expected to begin this fall and wrap up in 2022.

The Washington Post, 1/12/19:

Union Station prepares for a concourse makeover

The concourse at Washington’s Union Station will undergo a makeover beginning in the fall, a project that will double its capacity, relieve crowding and make for a more accessible and comfortable customer experience, Amtrak says.

In addition to providing a modern and brighter space for the 100,000 daily intercity, commuter and local travelers who pass through Union Station, the work also will improve access between Amtrak’s concourse and the mezzanine of the Metro station there.

“We will increase capacity, circulation and accessibility,” Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said.

The railroad is in the process of selecting a general contractor for the project, which will be done in phases over three years to reduce the impact on travelers and station retailers.

SNIP

Metro’s portion of the project will include a major facelift to its station that is accessed through the ground level of Union Station. In addition to improvements to the mezzanine, the plan calls for the installation of a new stairway to connect the mezzanine to the concourse, a new entrance from First Street NE and the expansion of the fare gate area.

Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said the changes are the result of years of planning to improve access and relieve congestion at Union Station, the busiest entry point into the Metro system with more than 28,000 daily entries, many of which are transfers from commuter rail, intercity rail and bus systems.

Amtrak news release:

April 25, 2019
Amtrak ClubAcela Receives Modern Makeover
  Train, station enhancements continue

WASHINGTON – Amtrak customers traveling to and from Washington Union Station can now enjoy the newly-renovated ClubAcela as part of a lounge station refresh initiative at select stations around the U.S.

ClubAcela is still in its convenient location near the platforms for easy boarding access, and features new carpeting, new and more comfortable seating, and contemporary furniture. Additional improvements include updated all-in-one touchless washbars in the restrooms, new light fixtures, and upgraded selection of snacks and beverages. A Metropolitan Lounge will open, and replace ClubAcela, as part of a larger Union Station renovation.

The lounge at Washington Union Station has long offered customers a comfortable and quiet place to relax before, after or during stops on their journey,” Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson said. “This effort to re-brand and upgrade our lounges is aimed at improving the overall travel experience and providing modern amenities that our customers expect.”

At Washington Union Station, ClubAcela operates between 4:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 5 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The lounge is available for Acela Express First Class, sleeping car customers, Single-Day Pass holders, Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Plus and Select Executive members. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, Internet access, fax and photocopy services, conference room access, newspapers, periodicals and television are provided. Attendants are available to assist with reservations, ticketing and local information.

The Metropolitan Lounges have been updated at Chicago Union Station, Boston South Station and William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. Work will soon begin to upgrade ClubAcela at New York Penn Station. In 2021, the Moynihan Train Hall in New York will feature a new Metropolitan Lounge.

Criticism mounts over proposed parking in Union Station’s $8 billion overhaul

It may be years, if not a decade, before construction begins on a proposed multibillion-dollar redevelopment of Union Station. But debate has already been heating up over a parking garage planned as part of the overhaul.

.  .  .   A replacement parking garage with nearly 1,600 spaces — about one-third less than what’s currently available — would be attached to the station, according to the plan.

SNIP

“The amount of parking proposed runs directly counter to our efforts to reduce automobile travel,” said Drew Courtney, a member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission who represents neighborhoods adjacent to Union Station.  .  .  .
