San Francisco's political leaders have bitterly fought recently over transit-related issues from enforcement of parking meters on Sundays to an increase of the vehicle license fee. But when it comes to the proposed 15-year, $1.2 billion contract to buy hundreds of new light-rail vehicles, everyone appears to be on board.

San Francisco MTA to acquire new light-rail cars for Muni service

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee today is expected to sign a $648 million contract to allow the the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) to purchase 175 new "fleet of the future'" light-rail vehicles for the city's Municipal Railway (Muni) service.

The contract includes options for an additional 85 cars, bringing the overall total to 260 cars. The resolution supporting what could be a $1.2 billion contract was approved by the city's Board of Supervisors last week, local news media reported.

To be manufactured by Siemens, the cars will help improve the reliability, safety and customer communications of the Muni service, SFTMA officials said in a press release.

Can a $1.2 Billion Fleet of New Trains Finally Save Muni?

Progress, like public transit in San Francisco, moves slowly. And rarely in a straight line. And Jesus, does it break down a lot. But in the not-too-distant future, the city’s frustrated commuters will finally be served by a light-rail fleet designed to withstand the rigors of San Francisco’s punishing terrain. It’s been a long time coming, and it won’t be cheap: The Siemens railcars being built in Sacramento and scheduled to begin rolling into town in October 2016 cost the city a neat $1.2 billion.

Muni’s new future fleet debuts on the factory floor

Like a model train fresh from the box, the plastic wrap protecting the floor of the first of San Francisco’s new Muni trains has yet to be broken.

And, yes, it has that new train smell.

The Examiner, San Francisco edition, 1/4/17:

First new Muni train from ‘fleet of the future’ arrives Friday the 13th

If you’re superstitious, it might be good luck or bad, but either way — it’s coming.

On Jan. 13, which happens to be Friday the 13th, Muni’s first train from its fleet of the future will arrive.

“We just couldn’t be more pleased it’s arriving,” said Ed Reiskin, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s director of transportation, in a report to the SFMTA Board of Directors.

He announced the train’s arrival to the board Tuesday, and emphasized the new train will be a more “comfortable ride for everybody.”

The first Siemens-built light rail vehicle for San Francisco entered revenue service. The new light rail vehicles will be built at the Siemens plant in Sacramento, Calif. In total, the company will deliver 219 light rail vehicles for San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Siemens’ largest order for light railcars placed in the U.S.

“An incredible amount of work went into making sure these state-of-the-art, once-in-a-generation vehicles are going to work well for Muni riders for many years to come,” said SFMTA Director, Transportation, Ed Reiskin. “When we initiated the contract, it was the largest light rail vehicle contract ever awarded in the United States and we are pleased that this project is ahead of schedule.”

“The start of the revenue service is an important milestone not only for Siemens and SFMTA, but also for the more than 700,000 passengers who use San Francisco’s transportation system per day. The new trains will contribute to the growing demand for mass transit in the booming metropolis,” said Sabrina Soussan, CEO of the Siemens Mobility Division.

Siemens newly-developed light rail vehicle is based on its Model S200 and is especially energy-efficient thanks to a light-weight drive system that recuperates braking energy and an LED lighting system that uses up to 40% less electricity than standard neon lighting. The trains for SFMTA include features informed by public input including a new seating configuration, new interior color schemes, and new exterior design.
