Philly.com 2/11/16:

Internal letter:  Amtrak CEO to seek budget cuts

Bad weather and cheap oil are are hurting Amtrak's bottom line, and its chief executive is demanding across the board cuts just four months into the fiscal year.

A letter obtained by the Inquirer from Joseph Boardman, Amtrak's president and CEO, to employees said he was seeking an average of 3.8 percent budget cuts from the agency's department heads. It also said more significant cuts are ahead.

This is a ploy, IMO, by Amtrak to appease congressional know-nothings.  The stance in effect communicates that Amtrak is being proactive to cut costs in order to be on a "glide path to self-sufficiency.*"

Amtrak should take a positive position by reporting how the railroad contributes to the country's overall economic well being by providing direct and indirect jobs, reducing carbon footprint, and enhancing emergency management plans.
