Charlie Moore named president of AllEarth Rail

Wed, 07/05/2017 - 10:09am -- Vermont Business Magazine

Charlie Moore, a railroad executive with more than 40 years of experience in the railroad industry, has been named president of AllEarth Rail, LLC. This is the next step for the firm that has acquired self-propelled passenger rail cars from Texas in order bring commuter rail back to Vermont. The commuter line is still in the planning stages, but the concept is to provide commuter rail in the northwestern part of the state initially. A demonstration of the service could happen before the end of this year.

As VBM was the first to report, Blittersdorf, via his new company AllEarth Rail, an affiliate of Williston-based solar manufacturer AllEarth Renewables, in April won a bid to purchase 12 vintage rail coaches for $4 million, from Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). Each of the Budd coaches has two diesel engines. The trains, therefore, would not require a separate locomotive, as the Amtrak Vermonter does.

David Blittersdorf Bets on Vermont Commuter Rail

Despite its name, rapid transit almost never has a speedy beginning. A typical new commuter rail system starts with months or years of transportation studies. Consultants' reports, political wrangling, and the securing of state and federal funds follow before any equipment is purchased or any infrastructure built.

But Williston entrepreneur David Blittersdorf, CEO of AllEarth Renewables, is eyeing an express route. Last year, he spent $5 million of his own money to buy a dozen 1950s-era self-propelled rail cars and several truckloads of replacement parts, which are due to arrive as early as this week.

AllEarth's commuter rail Budd cars pull into Vermont

Ten of Williston-based AllEarth Rail's newly purchased, self-propelled passenger rail cars arrived in Vermont last week and into Montpelier today, bringing AllEarth's intentions of initiating a private commuter-rail service in the Burlington area one step closer to reality. AllEarth president Charlie Moore told VBM that he's looking forward to showing the public what the cars can do in a demonstration run this fall.

MONTPELIER, Vermont — AllEarth Rail, the company planning to initiate a private commuter rail service in the Burlington area, received 10 of its newly purchased, self-propelled passenger rail cars last week, Vermont Business Magazine reported.

The cars, built in the 1950s, were purchased from Dallas Area Rapid Transit, where they were in operation between 1996 and 2012, the report said.

A recent analysis put start-up costs for a St Albans-Burlington-Montpelier commuter rail system at $301 to $363 million, including as much as $189 million for rolling stock, according to VBM.

Burlington Company Aims For Commuter Rail Renaissance With 'Self-Powered' Cars

The future of Vermont rail often looks north to Canada and the reintroduction of The Montrealer for passenger service between Vermont and Quebec. Commuter rail idea advances – a little bit

Montpelier gave the possibility of more passenger rail service in Vermont a small boost on March 26, when House legislators voted to instruct the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) to conduct a technical analysis of a commuter rail system that would serve the Burlington-St Albans and Burlington-Montpelier corridors.

Barre-Montpelier commuter rail to get a look

Williston-based AllEarth Rail, which is hoping to launch the nation's only privately operated commuter rail service, failed this spring in its push for the state to perform a technical analysis of how self-propelled rail cars of the type AllEarth owns could provide such a service. But the company's initiative is not dead.
