The current train station was built in the 1970s and is no longer up to code with the American Disabilities Act,” said Paul Maxwell, Port Huron Township Downtown Development Authority director.

Maxwell reported that a decision will be released within the next 30 days.

Hopes of including bus transit from the station also are in discussion.
But is there any transit to and from the station where it is now, especially given the late night arrival of #364 and the early morning departure of #365? The city's hotels all seem to be at least a mile north of the station's present location, which is near where the tracks descend into the tunnel that runs under the river into Sarnia, Ontario. But perhaps by being close to a freeway, it will also be closer to hotels. Of course this comes from somebody only interested in getting mileage on the Blue Water but finding it quite risky to venture too far from the station with the short overnight layover.

Times-Herald,  Port Huron, MI, 10/15/17:

Amtrak station under scrutiny

Officials don’t know yet if a federal grant to evaluate Port Huron’s existing passenger rail stop and other potential locations means Amtrak’s station will move from 16th Street.

But local residents will have two chances to find out more.

Editorial in Times-Herald, Port Huron, MI, 10/16/17:

New Amtrak station could help celebrate rail legacy

Nailed to a wooden utility poll on Pine Grove Avenue just south of the Blue Water Bridge is a sign that declares Port Huron an Amtrak-served community. There is also a sign on Water Street at 17th that seems to suggest that there is a passenger rail terminal nearby. It’s about two miles south on 16th Street.

Good editorial, but again they overlook one thing --- the train's calling times.  What good is being near points of interest when those points are closed for the night?  What benefit is being near public transportation when it's not running?  Like the Wolverines, the line may need multiple trips per day to give travelers that advantage.  When the International (the through train Chicago-Toronto), it served Port Huron in the middle of the day, not close to midnight and 6 AM like the eastbound and westbound trips respectively do now.

The Times-Herald, Port Huron, MI 10/27/17:

Expect a long fight over Amtrak station

Shelly Theriault sat patiently with her 14-year-old daughter, Laurren, at Port Huron’s Amtrak station early Wednesday morning.

It wasn’t quite 6 a.m., and it was still dark outside. But the two had made the trek over the border from Sarnia to the 16th Street station.

SNIP

Theriault is the kind of out-of-towner officials have said that they hope to attract to Port Huron, using Amtrak as a conduit to encourage them to stay and spend their money on local businesses.

A few takeaways from the above cited article:

He recalled an Amtrak trip from Phoenix to Chicago in 2011.

“One thing I noticed (was) that all the stations along the Phoenix to Chicago were beautiful and in the heart of the cities and not in the middle of an industrial park like ours is,” Carmody said in an online comment.

My problem with his story is that Amtrak hasn't served Phoenix since 1996.   In discussion of how convenient he found stations to downtown, the nearest Amtrak station to Phoenix is Maricopa, about 40 miles to the south.

She wished Port Huron downtown could be the first thing travelers see when they get off the train.

Does that really matter when arriving at 12 Midnight? What downtown businesses will be open at that hour?

Freed agreed BWAT taking the reins made sense. He pointed to the summer's unveiling of a bike share program, which was also spearheaded by the agency usually associated with its bus system. Port Huron Township officials additionally referenced the relationship in the hope to develop a multimodal hub with Amtrak and bus services in the area.

Once again, intermodalism is great.... but what intermodalism will exist after 12 midnight or before 6 AM?  It would not pay for the local transit agency to run its full slate of bus routes all around the city to accommodate the Amtrak passengers arriving and leaving the city.

BWAT needs help sifting Amtrak station options

A study assessing Port Huron's current Amtrak station and potential new locations has whittled the options down to nine.
