Gold Line Extension opens a whole new world: Phillip A. Washington

The Metro Gold Line Extension opens this Saturday, March 5, and will give the public a desperately needed transit option that will act as a relief valve for freeway congestion the San Gabriel Valley faces every day.

Thousands of Angelenos flocked to the San Gabriel Valley on Saturday to celebrate a major regional milestone: the first stretch of rail to carry passengers through the foothills in more than five decades.

The new Gold Line had a big first weekday at its most eastern station

On the first day it opened, the parking structure for the Gold Line’s eastern-most terminus off Citrus Avenue in Azusa reached capacity by 7 a.m. Monday, a sign that commuters moved quickly toward light-rail as an alternative to driving to and from work on the 210 Freeway.

Foothill Gold Line from Pasadena to Azusa Station & Parking Guide

Since passenger service started, the parking structures in Azusa have been filled to capacity by around 7 AM. Riders should know that other stations with parking have availability. The Irwindale Station is a great alternative for riders coming from the east. The station is located immediately off the I-210 Freeway at Irwindale Avenue and has had availability of parking this week. Below is a guide to help navigate to the Irwindale Station and other Foothill Gold Line stations.

Go here to see more.

It appears that the new extension is a victim of its own success. When new lines open, the new endpoint stations draw the most passengers since they will serve people who will drive from locations not reached by the rail line.   I am sure that Sierra Madre Villa station in eastern Pasadena (the former endpoint) saw a reduction in usage since people east of there now have stations closer to where they live.

Cities hope Gold Line extension is a ticket to growth

When City Manager Oliver Chi looks across Station Square next to the new Gold Line stop in Monrovia, he doesn't see a dilapidated train depot. He sees a bustling restaurant.

New Gold Line Foothill rail attracts young, old to newest line

The conversation was among strangers on a train.

I sat on the blue-speckled seat of the Gold Line Foothill extension train anonymously. No notebook. No camera.

The conversations materialized like puddles after the rain.

Here's that article.

Foothill Gold Line Update: Fasana and Murabito Respond to Los Angeles Times Commentary

A week after the historic opening of the Foothill Gold Line from Pasadena to Azusa, the Los Angeles Times ran a guest commentary by Ethan Elkind. Mr. Elkind’s view, which is consistent with a book he published on rail in Los Angeles in 2014, is that the Gold Line was only built because of politics. In his words, “the Gold Line extension is the price we all had to pay to secure funding for more cost-effective rail lines in densely populated parts of the county.”

How We Roll, April 28: parking at the Azusa Gold Line stations

Parking for the Gold Line is already prohibited on the streets in the Rosedale development immediately north of the APU/Citrus College Station, where the garage has been filling by 5:30 a.m. on many weekday mornings. The Council action taken Monday night involves the Azusa Downtown station, where Metro’s spaces in the parking garage have been filling between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on most weekdays. The city controls 145 parking spaces in that garage, which are not available to Metro riders — and Metro riders who park there will be cited by the city of Azusa.
