1 dead, 5 injured as train carrying members of Congress hits truck in Virginia

January 31, 2018 1:55 pm

A train carrying members of Congress heading to a retreat in West Virginia has hit a truck, Republican lawmakers have said.

WASHINGTON — A chartered train carrying dozens of GOP lawmakers to a Republican retreat in West Virginia struck a garbage truck south of Charlottesville on Wednesday morning.

At least one person was killed and another was seriously injured, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

And four people on board the train suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital including two Amtrak crew members and two passengers, Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said.

A train traveling from D.C. hit a vehicle that was on the tracks about 11:20 a.m. in Crozet, Woods said.

The National Transportation Safety Board was sending investigators to the scene.

Rep. Jason Lewis’ staff said that he was taken to the hospital to be checked out for a possible concussion.

Other lawmakers said they believed the person who was killed and the other who was seriously injured were in the garbage truck.

“Helped the two people in the garbage truck who are now in the ambulance. They are injured badly,” Rep. Roger Marshall, a doctor, tweeted.

Crozet,Va. — One person was killed when an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to an annual party conference in West Virginia collided with a truck here Wednesday morning.

The White House confirmed the fatality. One person was seriously injured.

“The President has been fully briefed on the situation in Virginia and is receiving regular updates,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.  “There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff.”

Sanders said White House officials were in touch with Amtrak, state and local officials. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected by this incident,” she said.

Amtrak also said no one on the train was seriously injured, though two crew members and two passengers were transported to a hospital with minor injuries, according to a spokeswoman.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it had dispatched a team to the site and would provide updates as they gather additional information about the crash.

A side effect of this incident is that being Wednesday and thus a Cardinal day, both 50 and 51 were already en route when the incident happened. Both are now in service disruption status.  I believe 51 made it to Culpeper, and 50 was last reported at White Sulfur Springs.  No word yet on how much damage was suffered at the crash site, but with a derailment often comes track damage.

Correct about 51 reaching Culpeper.... except they got the train number wrong.    From Fredericksburg, VA Free Lance-Star. 1/31/18:

Passengers stranded in Culpeper after Amtrak crash involving GOP legislators

Fabien Navidi’s body movements Wednesday afternoon were nearly robotic.

First, he looked at his watch, and then stared at a motionless Amtrak train, followed by a bite of pepperoni pizza.

Navidi was one of about 90 stranded passengers riding the Cardinal 50 from New York to Chicago at the Culpeper Depot, as federal officials started an investigation into why an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to a policy retreat in West Virginia collided with a truck in Crozet about 11:20 a.m.

No doubt the train crew is under great emotional distress.  I wonder if anybody paid attention to their well being.

The Washington Post, 2/1/18:

NTSB: Amtrak engineer activated emergency brake before train hit truck

Federal investigators said Thursday that data gathered from an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers that hit a garbage truck near Crozet, Va., on Wednesday indicates that the engineer activated the emergency brake and the train came to a full stop 20 seconds later.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) haven’t determined what caused the crash but said they are hopeful they will be able to recover footage from the train’s front-facing camera, which could offer insight on whether the truck was moving at the time of impact and whether the signal system at the crossing was functioning properly.
