CSX news release, 7/2:

Updated CSX Statement/Outreach Center Established

Maryville, Tenn., derailment

7:30 a.m. July 2, 2015

CSX is working with first responders and relief agencies in Maryville, Tenn., following the derailment of a tank car that is on fire. CSX personnel are on hand at an Outreach Center that has been established at Heritage High School. Displaced residents are being offered assistance, including lodging.

Around midnight, a train en route from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Waycross, Ga., derailed the single tank car loaded with acrylonitrile, a hazardous material used in a variety of industrial processes including the manufacture of plastics. The substance is flammable and presents an inhalation risk. First responders have ordered an evacuation of residences and businesses in a two-mile radius.

The train consists of two locomotives and 57 cars, including 45 loaded cars and 12 empty cars. Cars of acrylonitrile are located on either side of the burning rail car. No crude oil is among the rail cars. A total of 27 cars in the train are carrying hazardous materials.

AP, 7/2:

Smoke subsides after hazardous rail spill in Tennessee

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A CSX train car carrying hazardous material derailed and caught fire in the middle of the night in eastern Tennessee, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people and sending dozens to the hospital with respiratory issues and nausea.

The fire was still burning around noon Thursday, and officials said firefighters had been unable to get close to the burning car because of the heat. Blount County Mayor Ed Mitchell said there were also concerns that the fumes contained cyanide, a byproduct of burning the chemical acrylonitrile, which was leaking from the train car. The smoke had stopped by 6 p.m., however, Mitchell said.

CSX news release, 7/3:

Updated CSX Statement/Maryville, Tenn. - 12:30 p.m., July 3, 2015

Officials earlier today lifted the evacuation for community members and businesses affected by Wednesday night’s derailment of a tank car and fire in Maryville, Tenn.  CSX’s Community Outreach Center, located at 3737 East Lamar Alexander Parkway, will remain open through the weekend to meet the needs of residents and businesses in the area. CSX personnel are available to address costs as a result of the derailment, to answer any health and safety questions, and to distribute bottled water. Affected community members should bring photo identification, proof of address, and receipts for costs incurred.   The Community Outreach Center is open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday, and will remain open until all needs are met.

At the derailment site, CSX is working with federal and state environmental officials to plan removal of soils affected by Thursday’s tank car fire and the release of some portion of the rail car’s approximately 24,000 gallons of acrylonitrile, a flammable liquid used in the manufacture of plastics and in other industrial uses. The car derailed in a train that was en route from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Waycross, Ga. It was one of 57 cars on the train, which was pulled by two locomotives. The affected soils will be removed and replaced, and affected soils disposed of in an approved waste site. Air, water and soil sampling continues in coordination with federal, state and local officials.

Operations today also are focused on removing the two rail cars that remain at the site. The derailed car burned throughout the day yesterday and eventually most of the contents were consumed by the fire. Acrylonitrile in a second car, damaged by the fire, will be transferred to another rail car or tank. None of the material in the second car was released.  The investigation into the derailment continues in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration.

Knoxville (TN) News Sentinel, 7/8:

Water advisory expanded near Blount derailment site

MARYVILLE — Traces of acrylonitrile in a well within 350 feet from the site of last week’s train derailment in Blount County prompted officials Tuesday to expand the area in which residents are advised not to use well water.

Officials also lifted an advisory about Culton Creek, saying the levels of the toxic chemical used in making plastics are too low to impact aquatic life.
