SEPTA news release:

SEPTA Key to Launch for 'Early Adopters' on Monday, June 13

Up to 10,000 Contactless Cards Available for Travel on Subways, Buses & Trolleys; All Existing Fare Instruments Will Remain Available for Purchase & Use Through This Testing Phase

June 10, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, PA - SEPTA will welcome its first customers to the future of fare payment with the launch of the SEPTA Key "Early Adopter" program beginning Monday, June 13. This phase allows SEPTA to begin sharing the benefits of its fare modernization initiative with the public, while continuing work toward system-wide implementation.

During the Early Adopter program, up to 10,000 riders will be able to get an instant SEPTA Key card with their purchase of a Weekly or Monthly TransPass. These transit pass products are valid for travel on subway lines, city and suburban bus routes and trolleys.

"The SEPTA Key will bring long-needed upgrades to the Authority's fare payment and collection system," said Board Chairman Pasquale T. Deon Sr. "We're excited to share this project with our riders through the Early Adopter program."

For the Early Adopter program, SEPTA Key cards will be available at fare kiosks located at 12 stations on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines, and the SEPTA Sales Office at 1234 Market Street.

"This is a major step forward in the SEPTA Key fare modernization project," said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel. "The Early Adopter program will allow thousands of customers to begin experiencing the convenience of the SEPTA Key, while also providing valuable feedback that we can use to further enhance the customer experience moving forward."

All existing methods of fare payment will continue to be available to purchase and use throughout the Early Adopter program. SEPTA will give advanced public notice before any existing fare instruments -- such as tokens, paper transfers, tickets and magnetic stripe passes -- are phased out.

When fully implemented, all riders will be able to use SEPTA Key branded cards -- or other contactless payment devices -- to ride seamlessly throughout the system on all modes of travel. Regional Rail and CCT Paratransit will be included in a later phase of the SEPTA Key rollout.

Early Adopters will be the first to experience some of the benefits of the SEPTA Key. For example, SEPTA Key card holders will not have to go out and get a new TransPass every week or month - the contactless card can be reloaded online, or at fare kiosks. Early Adopter participants can also register their cards to protect against loss or theft.

SEPTA news release:

SEPTA Key Reaches 10,000 Early Adopters

Feedback on Contactless Cards Encouraged

June 30, 2016

SEPTA has reached the goal of having 10,000 Transit customers join the Early Adopters Program as part of the rollout of the SEPTA Key Fare program. The program, which began Monday, June 13, 2016, allowed SEPTA to begin introducing the benefits of its fare modernization initiative with riders, and receive valuable feedback and comments from our customers on their experience using the new contactless chip Key Cards.

Beginning Friday, July 1, 2016, new Key cards will not be available but this is not the end of the Early Adopters Program. SEPTA encourages customers who already have Key Cards to continue to purchase their Pass product, use the Card when they ride, and continue to share their feedback on the Key program.

Please remember, if you are an Early Adopter - don't throw out your Key Card. It can be loaded and reloaded with a new Pass product. Key Cards, which customers received during the "Early Adopter" program with their purchase of a Weekly or Monthly Transpass or One-Day Convenience Pass, are valid for travel on all City and Suburban bus routes and trolleys, and the Market Frankford, Broad Street and Norristown High Speed Lines.

The 10,000 customers who are participating in the program, can continue to reload their Key Cards with Weekly and Monthly Transpass fare products at the Fare Kiosk at the 12 Early Adopters stations and SEPTA's headquarter location at 1234 Market Street, by calling the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782, or through the SEPTA Key ecommerce website.

SEPTA news release, 7/22:

SEPTA Key Early Adopters Program for Transit Riders Expanding

Limited Number of Key Cards for Weekly & Monthly TransPasses Available at Sales Offices Aug. 1

July 22, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, PA (July 22, 2016) - The SEPTA Key Early Adopters program will expand starting Monday, Aug. 1, with a limited number of Key Cards loaded with Weekly and Monthly TransPasses on sale at two major sales offices. This will be followed by the activation of additional sales offices and station fare kiosks for reloading TransPasses during August and September.

SEPTA welcomed its first customers to the Key with the launch of the Early Adopter program on June 13, offering approximately 10,000 passes for sale at fare kiosks inside stations along the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines. Those passes sold out by the end of June, although Key cardholders have continued to reload their TransPasses online, over the phone and at the fare kiosks. These transit pass products are valid for travel on subway lines, city and suburban bus routes and trolleys. Regional Rail and CCT Paratransit will be included in a later phase of the SEPTA Key rollout.

Starting Aug. 1, Weekly and Monthly TransPasses loaded on Key Cards will be sold at SEPTA Sales Offices located at 15th Street Station and SEPTA Headquarters at 1234 Market Street. Then, starting Monday, Aug. 8, SEPTA will expand sales and reloading of Weekly and Monthly TransPasses to sales offices at major transit terminals. Additional station kiosks will be available only for reloading of Weekly or Monthly TranPasses. The full rollout schedule is posted online at http://www.septakey.org/key/.

SEPTA Key is the Authority's system-wide fare modernization program. When fully implemented, all riders will be able to use SEPTA Key branded cards - or other contactless payment devices - to ride seamlessly throughout the system on all modes of travel.

Early Adopters are the first to experience some of the benefits of the SEPTA Key. For example, SEPTA Key card holders do not have to go out and get a new TransPass every week or month - the contactless card can be reloaded online, or at fare kiosks. Early Adopter participants can also register their cards to protect against loss or theft.

SEPTA news release:

SEPTA Key Early Adopters Program Expands With 'Quick Trips'

Tickets For Single Rides On Sale At Kiosks In 18 Market-Frankford & Broad Street Line Stations; New Stations Will Be Added Weekly, Rollout Scheduled To Be Completed By Monday, Oct. 17

September 27, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The SEPTA Key Early Adopters program has expanded to include "Quick Trips" -- single trip tickets for Market-Frankford and Broad Street Line service that can be purchased at station kiosks. The addition of the Quick Trip feature gives riders the option to purchase their fare in the station without worrying about having a token or exact change beforehand.

A Quick Trip is a disposable magnetic strip ticket that customers can swipe at new Key turnstiles. A Quick Trip is valid for one-way travel from the station where it is purchased, and must be used on the day it is purchased. Station and date-of-purchase details are printed on the ticket.

There is no discount for a Quick Trip - the regular one-way transit cash fare of $2.25 applies. Also, a Quick Trip cannot be used in combination with a transfer. This new feature does, however, give riders added flexibility by allowing the use of debit and credit cards for single-trip purchases at station kiosks, and riders who use cash will receive change if they don't have exact fare.

The following 18 stations currently offer Quick Trip purchases:

- Market-Frankford Line: Erie-Torresdale; Dilworth Park; 15th Street (at Express 16th Street Entrances); 34th Street; 40th Street; Allegheny; Berks; Tioga; 63rd Street

- Broad Street Line: AT&T Station; Walnut-Locust; Cecil B. Moore; Spring Garden; Tasker-Morris; Ellsworth-Federal; Erie; Girard; City Hall

Additional Quick Trip-Stations will be added weekly, with all offering Quick Trip purchases by Monday, Oct. 17. SEPTA Ambassadors will be at stations throughout the Quick Trip rollout to assist customers.

In addition to Quick Trips, SEPTA is continuing with sales of Key cards loaded Weekly and Monthly TransPasses at selected sales office locations. These transit pass products are valid for travel on subway lines, city and suburban bus routes and trolleys. During this part of the Early Adopter Program, there is no additional charge for the Key card, so customers only pay the regular cost of the pass product.

Early Adopters are the first to experience some of the benefits of the SEPTA Key. For example, SEPTA Key card holders do not have to go out and get a new TransPass every week or month -- the contactless card can be reloaded online, at fare kiosks and over the phone. Early Adopter participants can also register their cards to protect against loss or theft.

SEPTA news release:

'Quick Trips' Now Available at All Market-Frankford & Broad Street Line Stations

Tickets For One-Way, Single Rides On Sale At Station Kiosks

October 17, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- SEPTA is excited to announce that customers can now purchase a "Quick Trip" for travel from any SEPTA Market-Frankford or Broad Street Line/Broad Ridge Spur station. This feature, which is part of the SEPTA Key Early Adopters program, expands customers' options for purchasing fares -- without worrying about having a token or exact change beforehand.

SEPTA first launched the Quick Trip -- a single ride, magnetic stripe ticket for Market-Frankford and Broad Street Line service -- at a limited number of stations on Sept. 26. It was phased in at additional locations each week, with the final stations coming online today. More than 15,000 Quick Trips have already been purchased by customers at SEPTA Key station kiosks.

The Quick Trip adds flexibility for riders by allowing them to use credit and debit cards for a single trip at station kiosks. The kiosks also give customers change if they use cash and don't have exact fare.

As more customers begin to use Quick Trips, SEPTA would like to remind customers that:

- A Quick Trip is valid only for one-way travel from the station where it is purchased.

- A Quick Trip ticket must be used on the day it is purchased. Station and date-of-purchase details are printed on the ticket.

- There is no discount for a Quick Trip -- the regular one-way transit cash fare of $2.25 applies.

- A Quick Trip cannot be used in combination with a discounted transfer. Customers who use transfers should continue to purchase their fares from cashiers, just as they do now.

- A Quick Trip ticket must be swiped through the magnetic card reader on a new SEPTA Key turnstile (the turnstiles with the red validator pad).

For more information about Quick Trips, including a new video and FAQs, visit http://www.septa.org/key/index.html.

Quick Trips are the latest feature to be rolled out to customers as part of the SEPTA Key Early Adopters program. SEPTA is also continuing with sales of Key cards loaded Weekly and Monthly TransPasses at selected sales office locations. These transit pass products are valid for travel on subway lines, city and suburban bus routes and trolleys. During this part of the Early Adopter Program, there is no additional charge for the Key card, so customers only pay the regular cost of the pass product.

SEPTA will continue to phase-in additional Key features later this year and into 2017. For more information about SEPTA Key, please visit http://www.septa.org/key/index.html.

SEPTA news release:

SEPTA Key Rollout Expands To Seniors

New SEPTA Key Senior Photo Identification Cards Beginning This Month

November 11, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, PA (November 11, 2016) - Seniors are now ready to join the ranks of riders transitioning to the SEPTA Key, with the first new Senior Photo Identification cards going out starting next week. With these cards, seniors won't have to show their ID to a cashier or operator - they can just "tap-and-go" for their free trips on all SEPTA subways, buses and trolleys, and applicable discounted Regional Rail fares.

Similar to other SEPTA Key cards, the Senior Photo ID Card includes a contactless chip that works by tapping the validators at turnstiles and on-board vehicles. The SEPTA Senior Key Card will eventually replace the other forms of identification currently accepted, including the Pennsylvania Senior Citizen Transit ID, Pennsylvania Driver's License and Non-Driver's Identification, Medicare Cards and Railroad Retirement Cards.

The approximately 40,000 seniors who have already applied for a SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card will receive them in the mail over the course of the next month, with approximately 10,000 cards sent out every week. Once seniors receive their new photo ID in the mail, they should discard their paper Pa. Senior Citizen Transit ID, if that is the form of identification they use for travel on SEPTA.

Please note: During the phase-in of the SEPTA Key, seniors can continue using their current Pa. Senior Citizen Transit ID, Pa. Driver's License or Non-Driver's License, Medicare Cards and Railroad Retirement Cards. Significant advanced public notice will be provided before SEPTA stops accepting these forms of ID for senior travel.

Seniors who have not applied for a SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card can do so at a number of locations, including SEPTA Headquarters at 1234 Market Street and the offices of many local elected officials. Pennsylvania state representatives, senators and others are playing a major role in helping seniors apply, with their offices taking in more than 10,000 applications and photos to date. For more information about how and where to apply for a SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card, please visit http://www.septa.org/key/index.html.

The launch of the SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card is the latest phase of the Early Adopters program. Since June, thousands of riders have purchased Weekly and Monthly TransPasses on SEPTA Key cards, which can be reloaded with passes online, over the phone and at station kiosks. Many riders are also experiencing the convenience of "Quick Trips" - single trip tickets for Market-Frankford and Broad Street Line service that can be purchased at station kiosks. Quick trips launched in September.

SEPTA will continue to phase-in additional Key features later this year and into 2017. For more information about SEPTA Key, please visit http://www.septa.org/key/index.html.
