WNYW-TV, FOX-5 in New York, NY, 9/12/13:

After federal wetland rules scuttled a $2.6 million project to create a biking and hiking trail along train tracks between two Adirondack resort villages, town officials have thrown their support behind a controversial proposal to remove the rails and create a multi-use trail bisecting the Adirondack Park.

NY plans tourist train upgrade and new trail in Adirondacks

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state regulators are proposing to extend a tourist train route and create a multi-use trail through the heart of the Adirondacks, moves which could boost visitors to remote areas currently accessible only on foot, kayak or canoe, officials announced Thursday.

AP & WPTZ-TV Plattsburg, NY 3/3:

Adirondack Scenic Railroad included on NY 'Seven to Save' list

Preservation League of New York State releases 2016-17 designees

The league released its "Seven to Save" designees for 2016-17 on Wednesday.

For more than a century, the active rail line has contributed to the prosperity of the western and central Adirondacks. Passenger and freight service dwindled over the years, with a brief rebirth during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. In 1992, a group of railroad enthusiasts worked, with the support of New York state, to develop the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.

The railroad has been debated recently because of a state-approved plan to remove 34 miles of track between Lake Placid and Tupper Lake. The route can be converted to a multi-use trail for hikers, bicyclists, snowmobilers and skiers.

Gov. Cuomo approves plan to partially preserve Adirondack rail line

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo approved a $23-million plan that will essentially split a 119-mile travel corridor into a scenic railway south of Tupper Lake and a multi-use trail north of Tupper Lake.

http://www.rtands.co...nt=Full Article

Does this mean that skiers heading for Lake Placid alight at Tupper Lake and then board snowmobiles for the 34 mile run to the resort and one time host for Winter Olympics?  How 'bout that for intermodal travel?  :P   Sloan

From Adirondack Scenic Railroad's Facebook page:

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad would like to invite you to “Rally for the Rails,” on June 3rd at the State Office Building on Genesee Street, in downtown Utica. The rally will begin at 4pm and be a positive event, showing support for retaining and restoring the railroad tracks that run between Utica and Lake Placid.

Here’s what to expect:

1. Music and gathering starting at 4pm
2. Welcome
3. Comments from Elected Officials
4. Reading of 34 reasons to keep the rails
5. Group photo
6. Sign postcards to Governor Cuomo

This “Rally for the Rails,” is in response to the New York State Department of Environmental Conversation’s (DEC) proposed plan to rip up 34 miles of railroad track between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid. New York State has proposed replacing the tracks with a recreational trail, despite presentations railroad and community volunteers have made to the State, demonstrating a fully mapped rail & trail system that would allow for both activities. The State’s plan eliminates the Adirondack Scenic Railroad’s operations between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, which carry approximately 20,000 passengers per year, but also eliminated a new business – Rail Explorers USA which carried 13,000 passengers in their first four months of operation. In addition to eliminating these prosperous businesses, the plan forsakes any future rail connections between the economic centers of the Adirondack Region – Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Old Forge, and the rest of New York State via interchange with Amtrak in Utica.
The railroad is listed on both the National & State Registers of Historic Places. The Adirondack Scenic Railroad carried 75,000 passengers in 2015 and is the second-largest tourist attraction in Oneida County, following Turning Stone Casino.

We ask that all attending the rally keep the event positive. Please do not gather in the street or block any sidewalks or entryways.

The Citizen, Auburn, NY 8/21:

Letter: Save North Country railroad tracks

In less than one week an irreplaceable asset may be lost here in upstate New York. In 1996 New York state made a promise to the citizens of New York to restore the railroad track in the North Country to allow the popular Utica-to-Lake Placid line to once again operate. Now, New York state has not only broken that promise, they have said they want to rip up the 34 miles of tracks from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid.

This Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, in Franklin County Supreme Court, the case will be heard. There should be no case. The rail corridor should remain as is — allowing hikers, skiers, snowmobilers and certainly trains to use this route through our beloved Adirondacks as it has for all of our lives!

'Running Wild with Bear Grylls’ films on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad

LAKE PLACID — Lights, camera, Shaq-ion!
Legendary NBA basketball player Shaquille O’Neil faced the wilds of the Adirondacks with survivalist Bear Grylls on NBC’s "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" starting with the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad hosted O’Neil along with the NBC film crews at the Lake Placid Station in early July as they filmed for the popular survival show.

The Sun, Elizabethtown, NY. 9/13/16:

Railroad track removal delayed until next year

DEC convenes stakeholder group to begin planning, discuss materials, historic preservation, but AARCH not part of that discussion

RAY BROOK — The state’s move to build the controversial recreation trail between Lake Placid and Tupper Lake has postponed removal of railroad tracks until next summer.

Initially, state construction looked to tear out the northern 34 miles of tracks in November, moving Adirondack Scenic Railroad excursion trains out of the region.

Instead, a group the state Department of Environmental Conservation considers “core stakeholders” has been convened to advise the process.

SNIP

But railroad operators are fighting in court to keep their business in place here.

The Scenic Railroad, managed by the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society (ARPS), filed litigation against DEC and the Adirondack Park Agency last spring.

The 2,200-page lawsuit claims DEC and APA did not properly consider historic provenance of the railroad line, which is listed on both state and national Registers of Historic Places.
