Attention Local Artists! ARRC Solicits Ideas for 2016 Official Art Print
ANCHORAGE, Alaska The Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) is now soliciting submissions for its annual commemorative artwork program. The artist selected will be commissioned to create artwork that is the basis for the 2016 Alaska Railroad official print.

Artist submissions should be presented as a single sketch no larger than 11 x 17 inches.

That's outrageous!  Artists do not make much money, unless their work is  in vogue.  To require an artist to give up intellectual property via a sketch in the hope that he or she might win a commission is unreasonable.

There is a lively art scene in the Harrisburg area, so I am quite familiar with artistic competitions (i.e. Art of the State and Pennsylvania Watercolor Society) and judging criteria. The routine is for an artist to submit samples of past work on either CD or slide, a resume of past achievements, and a statement of artistic philosophy.

Demanding speculative work is an act of greediness that allows contest sponsors to expropriate creativity for fee!

End of rant.
