With all the attention and money that could be heading toward San Pedro's waterfront and the Ports O' Call redevelopment (which is stalled, but still somewhere on the horizon), downtown SP wants to make sure that some of the traffic and money spreads their way, and they think the funnest, most effective way to do this is to get the Red Car trolley line to extend into the shopping district, says the Daily Breeze.

Excellent idea to make use of this resource. They already have a fine operation, and a downtown spur would be a plus. They do however need to expand the schedule beyond the current Friday-Saturday-Sunday routine and serve downtown and the waterfront attractions on weekdays.

Has San Pedro’s waterfront Red Car reached the end of the line?

San Pedro’s charming waterfront Red Car rail trolley took years of planning, design and construction delays — and $10 million — to finally become a reality along the waterfront 12 years ago.

Now, like the vast system of Red Cars that once crisscrossed Los Angeles, it may not survive.

I hope this supposed hiatus will not become a Seattle Waterfront Trolley scenario.  In that case, the Melbourne W-2 cars lost access to a maintenance facility, but planned re-start of operations from this "temporary" situation never happened.   <_<

First, regarding the San Pedro Red Car, I agree it would be a shame if this were lost.  With its 4-day-per-week schedule it is nothing more than a tourist attraction, also catering to cruise ship passengers while in port there.  That a street is being realigned and that the tracks will sit in the middle of the street would inevitably lead to safety concerns.  The light rail and streetcars that do street running now even experience accidents with motor vehicles. With the incompatibility of the antique cars running on this line, it may never be re-cleared to run again.  At very least, San Pedro should be looking at modern streetcars that can run within the street and better absorb the impact of a crash.  The question of course would then be whether it is worth the expense of spending money like Atlanta and Tucson (and even Washington DC who hasn't used theirs for revenue service yet) did for what will again probably be a less than daily operation without a clear destination.

As for Seattle, besides being cut off from its maintenance/storage facility, the Waterfront trolley would also have become a victim of the Boston-like project to submerge a freeway (the Alaskan Way Viaduct) under the ground.  Perhaps our Seattle members can tell us what the status is of that project, but I don't think its completion date is anywhere in the near future -- so even if a new facility were built for the Waterfront trolley the construction, whether current or impending, would have caused service to be suspended again for a significant amount of time.  And meanwhile, with the existing South Lake Union Streetcar and the soon to be completed First Hill Streetcar, serious consideration is being given to making Waterfront an extension of that network rather than bringing back the restored Melbourne cars.

SAN PEDRO in southern California has a heritage "Red Car" line replicating the days of Pacific Electric and it's drawing public support as its closure nears, the Daily Breeze reports: supporters will present a petition with 2,400 names to Los Angeles port commissioners on Thursday in part of their push to make sure the trolley service doesn’t vanish from the waterfront for good.

Red Car supporters plead to save San Pedro trolley line

Waging an uphill battle, supporters of San Pedro’s Red Car line pleaded with port officials Thursday to save the historic electric line that faces a shutdown next month as competing waterfront improvement plans progress.

San Pedro Red Car Line Not Dead Yet
Even though some have written off San Pedro’s streetcar as a tourist novelty worthy of history’s dustbin, many others want the charming waterfront transport kept alive. - See more at: http://www.lamag.com...h.02OMJSWT.dpuf

San Pedro’s Red Car unlikely to be spared by last-minute call for reprieve

Tears are sure to flow Sunday when the final blast of the Red Car’s E-flat horn sounds off on its final historic runs along the San Pedro waterfront.

A last-minute appeal by county officials and the area’s congresswoman to save at least part of the Harbor Boulevard line was made late this week, bringing a glimmer of hope that a reprieve yet could be in the works.

And so the OTOL Fest Curse takes another one.  I'm glad we got to ride it when it existed on our 2009 visit.
