As you know we have right now a one hour 48 minute layover for lunch at Jamaica on Saturday. The reason so much time was allotted was to give us time to travel one stop on the subway (and back) from Jamaica Station (Sutphin/Archer) to Jamaica Center (Parsons/Archer) where historically we have found more restaurants in our previous travels.

The area around Jamaica Station has been built up a bit since the station was renovated to accommodate new overhead walkways and better connections with the subways and AirTrain JFK. There may be enough places to your liking near Jamaica Station, which would eliminate the need for the round trip subway ride to Jamaica Center. I simply have not had the time I thought I might have to take a train there, a walk to preview the area, and another train out of there. Unless somebody else has to time to go over to Jamaica Station and walk around, we may not know. I'm toying with possibly going over there on Friday the 15th before I head for my hotel in um, Manh er, another borough.

If it is determined that we could eat lunch closer to Jamaica Station (hence the one hour 48 minutes becomes 48 minutes), it would then be possible to do the Hempstead round trip (and the return to Brooklyn, Flatbush Avenue (Atlantic) Terminal, South Ferry, etc. one hour earlier than posted. We shall see, as it would also bring us to dinner an hour earlier. The earlier hour would ensure we would ride the Atlantic Branch of the LIRR (Jamaica to Brooklyn) in daylight as opposed to twilight.

Any volunteers who can take the preview trip, or can I plan for a long Friday doing some late scouting?

Kevin I spent the last few hours trying to find new restaurants at JS with no luck. JC looks like it would still offer more variety and would serve to kind of break up the day a little. My .02

Preston, you're probably looking at the same or similar satellite images that I've been studying... since I assume you are still in Tennessee. I don't know how accurate they are with the restaurants they show, so nothing beats being there in person.

Agreed. Perhaps we can check it out on Friday. I come in on the crescent that day and don't have anything planned. We'll talk on the live chat tonight.

I looked on Yelp, and I didn't see anything in the station area. Just a chicken place a few blocks away. Mike and I will be arriving NYP on 2168 at 4:54 p.m. So if you want company during your friday investigation, we would do that. I am not sure that you need to make that extra effort unless you want to. When we arrive Jamaica on Saturday, we will see pretty quickly if there are new places, and can make an adjustment at that point. Just a thought that would save you some time in effort.

Worst case, if everyone is hell bent on saving a subway fare or two we can walk to Jamaica Center :)

Kevin, I went out to Jamaica today to survey what's out there in the immediate area of Jamaica Station. My results show the following all within a maximum of 3 blocks from the station. Georgie's Pizza, McDonalds, Crown Fried Chicken, Nathans, Subway (the food place, not the subway trains), another Pizza place with lots of tables, Dunkin Donuts, and a Chinese place. If it's decided that we'll eat in this area, I'll put the various places on a map and print out some copies to hand out on Saturday.
Alan,

Take care and take trains!

Subway (the food place, not the subway trains),

Aloha Alan

Wasn't the original Subway (food) in a Subway(train) station in NYC?

Eric,

The simple answer is no. All Subway resturants do have maps of the NYC subway on the wall paper, but they didn't start in the "subways". From the Subway site Faqs:

1. Who founded the SUBWAY® restaurants? When and where did the first restaurant open?

SUBWAY® restaurants was founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca, a 17-year-old college freshman, and family friend Dr. Peter Buck. The first restaurant opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA on August 28 and was called Pete’s Super Submarines.

2. When did the first SUBWAY® franchised unit open and where was it located?

The first franchised SUBWAY® unit opened in 1974 in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Alan,

Take care and take trains!

Thanks very much, sounds like a lot has been built up in that area in the past 8 years since a group of us ate in the area once before during a mini-Fest. Seems we don't have to worry about E or J or the extra $4.50 it would require on our Metrocards.
