Hampton Roads Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, VA, 10/20/14:

Light rail routes to Norfolk Naval Station narrowed to 6

The list of potential routes for extending light rail to Norfolk Naval Station is shorter.

Hampton Roads Transit released a map showing six corridors that staff considered the most technically sound and the most preferred by the public among a host of possibilities that came out of prior workshops. The options still on the table include a corridor that runs by Old Dominion University and two that skirt Norfolk International Airport.

This story

Looking at the map it appears that the line could not serve both ODU and the vicinity of the airport, but both would be excellent passenger generators. It does appear, however, that whichever route is ultimately chosen, it will be a branch off the existing starter route rather than a continuation beyond the current EVMC/Fort Norfolk terminus.

Whatever happened to... the light rail route to Norfolk Naval Station?

Back in September 2013, Titustown resident Nathaniel Riggins and 40 others sat around a table with push pins and a string.

The goal: map out the best route from the current Tide light-rail route to Norfolk Naval Station, the region’s largest employer.

Much of the attention for extension of the starter TIDE light rail line has been focused on Virginia Beach. It is good that they are still looking not only at Virginia Beach but Norfolk Naval Base and Chesapeake as well. A multi-tiered system will serve the area well.

The whole process to completion could take from five to 15 years, Navarrette said.

5 to 15 years? That's a long time. Needs for the areas served could change the longer this lingers.

NORFOLK, Va. — In a departure from previous plans to pick the preferred route and move forward with just one environmental study, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will study two potential light rail routes to Norfolk Naval Station under a new recommendation from the Federal Transit Agency, The Virginian-Pilot reports.

HRT CEO William Harrell presented the FTA's recommendations to a Norfolk City Council transportation subcommittee, with the subcommittee taking no action. HRT is asking the city manager for a letter of encouragement to proceed, which would lead to them issuing requests for proposals for two different consultants to complete independent studies. Hampton Roads Virginian-Pilot, 6/15/16:

In major shift, HRT will study two light-rail routes to Norfolk Naval Station

Hampton Roads Transit will study both potential light-rail routes to Norfolk Naval Station under a new recommendation from the Federal Transit Administration, the group that oversees federal funding for public transit.

Here is the original story.

This is a significant change in direction. One would have assumed that the Norfolk Naval Base extension would have started from the current western end of the line at EVMC/Fort Norfolk. The new proposal to start from Military Circle and also serve the airport would create a multi-pronged system assuming the addition of service to Virginia Beach and yet another leg if a line to Chesapeake is built as well. If both options could eventually be built as the article suggests, that would be great but I would not hold my breath for it.

Column in Hampton Roads Virginian-Pilot, 11/19/16:

The future of light rail in Norfolk may be a decade away

Light rail is dead in Virginia Beach. Long live light rail in Norfolk?

There’s lots of talk of “what’s next?” after the defeat of light rail in the Beach, 57-43 percent.

Well, it may take an entire decade before Norfolk sees another finished leg of The Tide. That’s because it takes an incredible amount of time, work and money to study and build a route.

Light rail expansion in Norfolk could take first step soon

The first step in exploring the expansion of Norfolk’s light-rail system within the city could begin in April.
